Herby’s team fill up on breakfast trip spoils

Thursday morning saw the bowlers competing in the monthly Rawsons breakfast trips competition take to the greens after enjoying their hearty breakfast.

LAST week’s Wentworth Bowling Club’s Family and Friends development bowls was won by Zoë Dougall and Albert van Niekerk.

The biscuit prize was awarded to Dudley Sanders and Steve Murray.

Clynton Williams and Ruth Petzer shared the spoils from the 60/40 board. Members of the community who would like to take up the challenge of mastering the bias are invited to join the development bowls initiative on Wednesday afternoon. Play starts at 3pm. Thursday morning saw the bowlers competing in the monthly Rawsons breakfast trips competition take to the greens after enjoying their hearty breakfast. In a count-out decision, Herby Hoffman, Alan Bower and Johan Vorster were declared the winners over Jumbo Nel, Brian Smith and Ivor Aylward. Second session prize went to Brian Osman, Chris Pozyn and Paula Osman. The raffled whisky went the way of Rob Philogene and the bottles of Rawsons red wine were taken home by Sharon de Kock and Oom Dirk Venter. The roast meat was won by Tom Cloete. Dawn Spack and Paula Osman shared the booty on the first 60/40 board and Dave Rowe and Andy Cloete pocketed the winnings from second Board. The next Rawsons breakfast trips will be played on 29 September.

Friday’s Bluff Meat men’s bowls saw Brian Smith and Johan Nel take top spot on the rostrum with a convincing plus 14. In second place were Grahan Bransby and Robin de Gouviea. The sportsmen’s award went to Allan Ritchie, Terry Micholson and Wessie van der Westhuizen. Steve Evenwell left the club with a big smile and the raffled pork roast tucked under his arm. Ben Venter was equally satisfied with the beef roast he won. Ken Koch and Andy ‘J’ were the winners on the 60/40 board.

The club welcomes home the regular organisers of the Friday bowls, Tomcat and Maria Cavanagh, and hopes their family holiday in the UK has afforded them many happy memories.

Sunday’s Grand Rapids Big Jim pairs competition resulted in the second count out decision in a week. This time it was Kurt and Dawn Spack who won the day over Stevie Baker and Moses Nuba. The second session prize went to Herbie Roux and Johan Nel. Kurt added to his winnings when he won the first prize on the 60/40 board, while Margaret Walters pocketed the second prize. Brendon Davies won the raffled meat roast and Mouse Ratcliffe took home the whisky.

A big thank you is extended to Ellen Loots who sacrificed her game to step up to the plate and take on the morning’s bar duty. Next month’s Big Jim pairs will be held on 25 September.

Bowlers are reminded of the Chicken Shack pairs competition which will be played on Wednesday morning. Play starts at 9am.

Wentworth BC hosts 24 bowlers from 12 clubs in the Port Natal men’s pairs competition on Sunday, 4 September. Because of this, the start of the planned Chicken Run ‘tabs in’ bowls has been postponed to Sunday, 11 September. The community is invited to visit the club and enjoy some top class bowling.

Dancing enthusiasts are invited to the club on Friday evenings to enjoy music from the 60s, 70s and 80s with some country and boere musiek thrown in. The girl/guy duo of Ringz will provide the entertainment. There is no cover charge and a cash bar will be available with light meals on sale. The fun starts at 7.30pm. The kitchen is open from Tuesday to Sunday and is offering delicious, home-cooked meals. The burgers Steve and Dylan prepare are developing an acclaimed reputation. The boys can be contacted on 071-550-8487 for daily menu details and take-away orders.
