THE focus of bowls at Wentworth Bowling Club last week was centred on the annual sponsored Kingdom Slots tournament played at Durban Wanderers Bowling Club on Thursday, 18 August.

Much deliberation and consultation was exercised in the selection of the teams put forward to compete for the coveted trophy in an attempt to win the tournament and bring the competition home to Wentworth in 2017.

These efforts proved successful when the team comprising Terry Micholson, Dave Carroll, Brian Smith and Robin de Gouveia emerged victorious and brought the trophy and the tournament back to Wentworth. Added to this, the side skipped by Wayne Smith who was ably assisted by Ron Addinal, Johan Nel and Margaret Walters was awarded third place for the day. Thanks are extended to Kingdom Slots for their support of the game of bowls which encourages new players to involve themselves in the ‘friendly’ game. A special tribute is proffered to Elarish Restaurant and Conference Centre which sponsored an extra team of bowlers from Wentworth to compete in the tournament.

The community is reminded that the Wentworth BC coaches are available every Wednesday at 1.30pm. Coaching is followed by the weekly Family and Friends development initiative at 3pm. The object is to stimulate interest in the game of bowls. The old adage that bowls is the game of ‘old man’s marbles’ no longer applies. Bowls is a vibrant, dynamic and exciting activity that can be played and enjoyed by all ages. Wentworth BC currently boasts Zoé Dougal, an 18-year-old bowler, who holds the title as the Port Natal District novice champion. The current world singles champion, Leif Selby from Australia, retired from the competitive game of bowls at the age of 35 to spend more time coaching youngsters. This is the scenario the Wentworth BC strives to achieve – the development of emerging competitive champions who can take on the best in the world and subsequently contribute to the sport.

This week’s development bowls was won by Johnny ‘Mooiman’ du Plessis, Dave Carrol (Jnr) and Stan McKenzie. Phil Hill, Dudley Sanders and Victor Shaw were awarded the biscuit prize. A cake was donated by Margaret Walters for raffling. Ann Bonthrone won the raffle and took home the cake as a treat for her grandchildren. The 60/40 board spoils were shared by a beaming Craig Herholdt and Vicky Williams.

Friday’s Bluff Meat Supply men’s bowls once again produced a close result with Hilton Lassak, Duncan Wright and Johan Nel taking first place by one shot over Colin Nicholas, Barry Buckland and Hennie Marais. Dirk Venter, Andy Cloete and Ron Addinal were given the day’s sportsmen’s prize. Ellen Loots was the elated winner of the raffled pork roast and Wessie van der Westhuizen took home the beef roast. Ken Koch and Jumbo Nel were the winners on the 60/40 board.

This week heralds the monthly Rawson’s breakfast trips on Thursday morning. Play starts at 9am but bowlers are reminded to be at the club early enough to enjoy the hearty breakfast treat. On Sunday morning bowlers will compete in the Grand Rapid Spur Big Jim pairs. Once again play starts at 9am.

Starting on Sunday, 3 September at 9am the popular Chicken Run ‘tabs-in’ competition will be reintroduced. This will take the form of drawn pairs and prizes will be awarded to third place. Winners will each take home a whole chicken, the second place bowlers will receive a pack of chicken pieces and the third placed side will win a pack of eggs. The competition is open to all bowlers from any clubs and club ‘whites’ will be the dress code.

Cora van der Westhuizen is going through a difficult time with her health. The club wishes her a speedy recovery and hopes to see her and her competitive spirit back on the greens soon.

Steven and Dylan are cooking up a storm in the kitchen and have received many positive comments from diners. They have a regular menu and offer daily specials. The Friday special of chicken liver peri-peri is proving popular and is attracting a following of regular customers. Take-away orders are welcome. The chefs can be contacted on 071-550-8487.

The hall is available for hiring for private functions and braai facilities are on offer for corporate functions and team building events. The big screen can be set up to watch sporting highlights. Call the club on 031-467-7103 for details.
