Du Plessis family claim WBC singles titles for 2016

On Sunday morning, the final of the Doug Mitchell singles competition was played between Ben Newton and Johnny ‘Mooiman’ du Plessis.

WENTWORTH Bowling Club’s (WBC) development bowls, which was played on Wednesday, 8 August, was won by Dudley Sanders and Victor Shaw.

Johan Nel and Johan Swanepoel were rewarded with the biscuit prize for their afternoon’s efforts.

The 60/40 board spoils were shared by Dudley Sanders and Margaret Walters. The development bowls is an initiative to attract members of the community to try their hand at the game. Play starts at 3pm and an open invitation is extended to all interested parties.

The Bluff Meats men’s bowls played on Friday, 12 August went to the wire with one shot separating the first and second teams. Winners were Hilton Lassak, Andy Cloete and Robin de Gouviea who pipped Ken Thomas, Kurt Spack and Herman van Zyl to the post. Sportsmen’s prize was awarded to Coy Schraun, Tom Cloete and Ivor Aylward. Ken Thomas was the happy recipient of the raffled pork roast and Ken Koch took home the substantial beef roast. The first 60/40 board was won by Andy Cloete and Graham Bransby and the second board booty was shared by Herman van Zyl and Ellen Loots.

After a hard fought battle, Johnny emerged victorious to become this year’s champion. This gives the Du Plessis family a double – Eileen and Johnny both now hold singles titles for 2016.

Condolences are extended to Len Driemeyer and his family on the death of Heidi. A service for Heidi will be held at the New Apostolic Church on the corner of Bluff and Old Mission Roads on Tuesday, 16 August followed by a celebration at WBC.
