THE weekend’s wintery rain resulted in all the scheduled club competitions at Wentworth Bowling Club being postponed until further notice.

Members are asked to be vigilant with regard to checking the notice board for the re-postings of these games.

Weather-permitting, the women’s drawn fours and pairs finals will be played on Tuesday afternoon at 12.30pm. The women involved in this are Sharon de Kock, Ann Bonthrone, Cheryl Waterman, Jenny Greef, Cora van der Westhuizen, Bernie Pool, Zoë Dougal, Maree Sadie, Eileen du Plessis, Margaret Walters and Ellen Loots.

This being the last week of the month, the green staff will be preparing for the club’s regular monthly competitions. On Wednesday morning the Chicken Shack pairs competition will start at 9am. Thursday will see the teams who do battle for honours in the Rawsons breakfast trips enjoy a hearty breakfast treat before the start of bowls at 9am. There is a new format for this competition which will result in prizes being allocated down to 24th place, based on an annual accumulation of scores. Details are available at the club.

On Sunday a full contingent is expected for the Grand Rapid Spur Big Jim pairs competition. Once again play starts at 9am. Good bowling wishes are extended to all members and visitors participating in these competitions.

Terry Micholson and Hennie Marais were the winners of Wednesday’s Family and Friends development bowls. Lucille Potgieter, John Swanepoel and Johnny ‘Mooiman’ du Plessis were awarded the weekly biscuit prize. Eileen du Plessis and Lorraine White shared the prizes on the 60/40 board draw. The development bowls is an initiative to attract members of the community to try their hand at the game. Play starts at 3pm and an open invitation is extended to all interested parties.

Friday’s Bluff Meats men’s bowls saw Ken Thomas, Neil Smith and Peter Snyman win the day with a plus 21. Eleven shots behind, in second place, were Herby Hoffman, Claude Newman and Ron Parsonage. The sportmen’s prize went to Terry Micholson, Johan Nel and Tom Cloete. Des Howard provided Sunday lunch for his family when he won the raffled pork roast and Graham Bransby cheerfully gathered the raffled beef as reward for his morning’s efforts. Brian Smith and Herby Hoffman shared the rewards from the first board draw and Ken Thomas and Andy Cloete were the winners on the second board.

Due to personal work commitments, Bernie Pool has tendered her resignation as the convenor of the club kitchen. The committee and members thank Bernie for stepping up to the plate and seeing to the running of the kitchen and for handling this task in her usual friendly, convivial manner. Bernie will continue providing meals and snacks until the new kitchen management team has been officially appointed. Exciting developments are in the pipeline in terms of the take-over of this responsibility and members should look forward to a fresh approach to the food service at the club.

Thanks are extended to those members who contributed to Doug Bird’s wake on Friday. The camaraderie and fellowship that prevailed was a fitting send-off to Doug and a clear indication of the close association between members of the club and the staff.

The club kitchen is open from Tuesday to Sunday for sit down and take-away meals. Menu details are available from Bernie who can be contacted on 072-294-1392.

The hall is available for hiring for private functions and green and braai facilities are on offer for corporate functions and team building events. The big screen can be set up to watch sporting highlights. Contact the club on 031-467-7103 for details.
