Lilah claims open singles honours, advances to champion of champions

Dudley Dorrofield ran a draw on the real horses running in the July, and Deon Els, Deon Maritz, Glynis Mackrory, June Foster and Maureen Molton all drew winners.

THE final of Bluff Bowling Club women’s open club singles competition was played on Saturday under difficult and cold conditions, and in a closely contested match, Lilah Nel emerged victorious over Elize Stapelberg.

This means Lilah will represent the club later in the year in the Port Natal champion of champions competition.

Congratulations to both on their performance and the club wishes Lilah good bowling.

In the men’s section, there were two games of nominated pairs played. Clinton Bisset and Deon Maritz beat Dudley Dorrofield and Mouse Ratcliffe, while Robert Mhlongo and Noel Morel beat Gary Moffet and Jorge Santos.

The men’s drawn pairs saw Dave le Roux and Steve Baker win against Chris Pozyn and Ryan Warren, and Greg Dorrofield and Brian Osman had a walkover against Dave Rowe and Rodger Scott.

On Friday night, as is tradition before the July Handicap, the club held a vegetable derby. Thank you to Dudley, Greg and all the jockeys for their work in ensuring the event went off with all the usual fun and laughter. It was a noisy evening and the hamburgers provided by Phyllis were wonderful. In the final race, the ‘owners’ race, the Green Pepper got off to a very slow start but won in the end and provided a nice profit for the syndicate that owned it. In between all this, the weekly attendance draw was done, but Ryan Warren was not present to collect so the prize money goes up again.

This weekend, Port Natal will hold the qualifying masters at Stella Park Bowling Club. From Bluff BC, Jay Retief will represent the women and Robert Mhlongo and Gary Moffet will play in the men’s event. Club members are asked to go along and support these people. The winners go on to play in the Port Natal masters the following week. Bluff is proud of its masters players – Sarie Bisset and Bridget White in the open section and Glynis Mackrory and Daphne Reinhardt in the senior section. The venue is to be advised. The club wishes all these players the best of bowling.

Next weekend’s club competitions see some women playing senior singles and the men playing novice singles on Saturday, while on Sunday there will be mixed trips played. Members are to check the notice board.
