Gwen snaffle women’s open singles title

In the monthly bowls draw, Dirk Roos won the top prize of R750, Ron Hook R500 and Arnie Harper R250.

IN a busy week at Wanderers Bowling Club, the women completed their round robin playoff for the women’s open singles title, and Gwen Tait emerged the winner with the most points and best shot difference.

Runner-up was Jo-Anne Jordaan.

In chronological order, Taffy’s pairs on Wednesday was played out. First session went the way of Lofty Cawthorne and Dave Faifer on 2+6. Dennis Gericke and Andy Cloete won second session with 2+11 and the overall winners on 4+11 were Herbie Roux and Johan Nel. In the raffle draws, Ken Thomas won the meat, Greg McGuinness a set of headphones and Honey Kitchenbrand a beer glass. Nobody had the winning lotto numbers of 2-6-9 so it is a carry-over. Kurt Spack (40) and Julia Venter (R20) shared the 60/40 board spoils.

On Thursday, Bob’s ‘surprise package’ bowls ended up with players playing a pairs mix ‘n mash with different partners for individual placings. Play was over three sessions. The final results had three players on 10 points out of a possible 12. Kurt Spack was third with 10+3, Bernie Pool came second with 10+4 and Bob Hayward was the winner on 10+7. Anne Bonthrone and Honey Kitchenbrand each won R50 on the board draw.

The men’s and women’s inter-club league was played on Saturday. The women had a clean sweep of 5-0 against Morningside, making up for their loss last week to Hillcrest.

The men’s A side managed three points against Hillary away, thanks to Arnie and his team getting a good 26-11 win. Richard went down by eight shots and Steve by two. The B side, also away at Hillary, managed a 4-3 thanks to a win by six shots by Robin Grobler and a three shot victory for Dennis. Unfortunately Jimmy and co went down by 15 shots.

The C side got a clean sweep against Bluff 5-0, thanks to a very good win by Errol Pienaar and team and also Chris Klopper and his team. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for the D side who conceded a 0-5 loss to Parkhill at home. Terry Brown and Neville Phillips were skips of those sides.

On Sunday morning, while the breakfast trips was being played, Richard and Anthony as well as Wonke and Luke were battling it out in the resumption of the pro 10 pairs. Sadly, they both went down – Wonke in the first game, and Richard in the second one after that.

Breakfast trips results: Sportsman’s prize with a score of 0-19 went to Rob Philogene, Denis and Chantal Hearnshaw. Ron Hook, Mike Flack and Jeff Cronje took the first session with 2+9. Ron Davids, Clive Du Plooy and Judy Green took second session with 2+10. third prize (sponsored by Dan Paruk), went to Lofty Cawthorne, Robbie Carr and Val McCaffrey with a 4+19. Second place went to Team Alpine comprising all the Hawkins members – Kim, Nigel and Lorinne. First place went to Wentworth visitors Brian Smith, Dave Carroll and Rob de Gouviea also with a 4+19. In the board draw Terry Brown and Chris Klopper won meat hampers and Andy Cloete and John Yunnie each won R50.

After prize-giving for the trips, the 2015 bowls prize giving took place. The mixed nominated pairs went to Lofty and Jo-Anne, Steve and Barbara runners-up. Mixed trips winners Eric Smit, Joan Bruce and Wonke Somtseu, runners-up Robbie Carr, Gwen Tait and Derek Stevens. Mixed fours winners Steve Van Rooyen, Lorraine Du Preez, Jo-Anne Jordaan and Brian Deats, runners-up Kim Hawkins, Bob Hayward, Anne Smit and Cynthia Addinall. Men’s drawn pairs winners Richard Hendicott and Mike Freeman, runners-up Lofty Cawthorne and Errol Pienaar. Men’s nominated pairs winners Roy and Graham Funnell, runners-up Richard and Wonke. Men’s drawn trips winners Steve Van Rooyen, Errol Pienaar and Tommy Simpkins, runners-up Kim Hawkins, Mike Freeman and Derek Stevens. Men’s drawn fours winners Arnie Harper, Jeff Bolt, Terrance McGlynn and Dave Matthews, runners-up were Lofty, Chris Klopper, Phil Pieterse and Dave Faifer. Men’s handicap singles winners Kim Hawkins, runner-up Paul White. Men’s open singles winner Roy Funnell, runner-up was his brother Graham. Men’s senior singles winner Derek Stevens, runner-up Arnie Harper.

In the women’s section, winners will be names first followed by the runners-up. Women’s drawn pairs: Joan Bruce and Val McCaffrey, Louisa McGlynn and Chantal Hearnshaw. Women’s nominated pairs: Lorraine Du Preez and Val McCaffrey, Lorinne Hawkins and Barbara Neill. Women’s drawn trips: Lorinne, Gwen and Barbara; Lorraine, Louisa and Val. Women’s drawn fours: Lorinne, Barbara, Val and Chantal; Joan, Nicola, Anne and Debbie. Women’s handicap singles: Jo-Anne Jordaan and Val McCaffrey. Women’s open singles: Joan Bruce and Jackie Freeman. Women’s points singles: Louisa McGlynn and Joan Bruce. Women’s senior singles: Joan Bruce and Gwen Tait.

The Triple C trophy winners were Joan Bruce for the women, and Derek Stevens for the men.

On Friday, 10 June, the R700 snowball was won by Mitty Chelin. The lotto was not won and so is a hefty R1,180 carry-over. The various meat pack winners were: Lamb – Tommy Simpkins, rolled beef – Chris Fourie, pork roast – Richard G, rump steak – Porky Hauptfleisch, chicken pack – Terry Brown, and chicken – Lorraine Du Preez.
