Gritty Quins slay Durban Mets on rugby field

The first team were made to work very hard and the crowd witnessed 11 tries during the match.

THE second round of fixtures started in a positive manner for Harlequins Rugby Club, as both their teams did the double over newly promoted Durban Mets. Some very exciting rugby was played and spectators were entertained with beautiful running rugby.

The second team started like a house on fire and scored within two minutes, but were made to work very hard by a determined Mets outfit. Both teams approached the encounter with contrasting styles, which made for an entertaining game.

It was 12–5 at the break and anyone’s game. Quins were determined to not let their lead slip and slowly got the ascendancy as the match wore on. A late try by flyhalf Jeffery Ackerman sealed the bonus point for the home side as they chased the knockout places. Man of the match awards went to Dylan Mason and Jeffery Ackerman.

The first team were made to work very hard and the crowd witnessed 11 tries during the match. The first half was pretty even and Quins shaded it 19–12 at the break. In a period of madness, there were six tries scored within 20 minutes as Mets drew level and the Mighty Quins responded beautifully with some open running rugby. Mets fought hard to level the game at 26-all, but it was the Quins backs who broke the visitors’ hearts as they ran the visitors ragged at the back. Tinevimbo Gurure scored a hat-trick as the home side pulled away to a 45–26 victory that looked comfortable on the scoreboard but was far from it on the field. Man of the match awards went to James McFadden and Tinevimbo Gurure.

This week Quins plays away to Ballito Dolphins on Saturday.
