THE last men’s competition of 2015 at Wanderers Bowling Club was played out in the last week or so.

The men’s fours final had been held over for a considerable time due to sickness or one or other reason, but was eventually played out during the last week or so.

The 21-15 tussle between Lofty Cawthorne, Chris Klopper, Phil Pieterse and Dave Faifer versus Arnie Harper, Jeff Bolt, Terrance McGlynn and Dave Matthews was a little one-sided with Arnie and co winning by a good margin to take the title.

The 2016 men’s and women’s open singles resumed with the following results:

Arnie Harper beat Errol Pienaar 21-17 in the first round (apologies for omitting this result last week). In second round results, Graham Funnell beat Terrance McGlynn (score unknown), Anthony Carr beat Mike Flack 21-11, Lofty Cawthorne beat Kim Hawkins 21-15 and Eric Smit beat Arnie Harper 21-19.

The women resumed their open singles round robin playoffs with Lorinne Hawkins beating Chantal Hearnshaw 21-15 and Gwen Tait beating Val McCaffrey 21-5.

In the Oppenheimer which started on Sunday morning, kudos go to Mike and Jackie Freeman who played like stars to win all three of their round robin matches to win their section. Steve Van Rooyen and Mary Rust also managed to win their section and they will all resume next Sunday morning at Stella Park. Good bowling Freemans, Steve and Mary.

The club’s own breakfast trips also took place on Sunday morning. Arnie Harper with Tommy Simpkins and Claude Newman took first place overall with the excellent score of 4+39. Dennis Gericke with Joe McNamara and Dave Faifer finished second with 4+17. Phil Pieterse with Rob Philogene and Dave Matthews won the first session with 2+15 and second session went the way of Ken Thomas with Julia Venter and Wonke Somtseu. Their score was 2+9. The sportsman’s prize went to Hilton Lassak with Phil and Craig with 0-16. Arnie Harper and Hilton Lassak each won R50 on the board draw.

The event was followed at noon with an appearance by the live band ‘Reflex’ who rocked Vic’s bar with their vibrant sounds and a scrumptious lunch was

provided by Samantha’s kitchen, all of which kept patrons occupied and entertained all afternoon and into the early evening.

Next Wednesday, 13 April is Taffy’s nominated pairs in the morning, and mid-week league in the afternoon. The playoffs of the night bowls takes place that night. Thursday, 14 April is Bob’s inaugural ‘surprise package’ when one of three formats of play will be used, each of which is different to anything you’re used to. Take a pen and pitch up prepared to learn something new. Then on Sunday, 17 April it’s the pairs skins. Members are urged to support these events.

The men’s interclub league also gets underway next Saturday, 16 April. Teams have been selected so men are to acquaint themselves with their position, venue and so on, by checking the notice board.

Last Friday’s R700 snowball was won by Bonita Buitendag. Meat pack winners were Lorraine Du Preez (lamb pack), Hennie Geldenhuys (rolled beef), Gwen Tait (pork roast), Neil Clark (rump steak), Clive Symons (chicken pack) and Jackie Freeman (chicken). The lotto was not won and bears a R820 carry over. Next Friday there will be a farewell for barman ‘Ranga’ followed by karaoke. Pitch up early to secure your place.

Let’s all bear a thought for the sick – Eric Kitchenbrand is back in hospital, and is not at all good. It seems he has a bone disorder which gives him great pain. The club wishes him a full and speedy recovery.

Support Samantha’s kitchen – her menu is varied, well priced and the meals are simply delicious. She can be relied on to offer true value for money.
