Mike’s open singles knockout darts hit home

It was an animated final with both pairs eagerly supporting their partner, hoping for a setup and/or checkout.

DURBAN West Darts Association reports that Firwood Sports Club hosted the LCI Sports Cup darts game last Tuesday, 23 February.

The drawn doubles event saw Phillip Snyman of Yellowwood Park pair with Kem Gayanchand, Firwood.

They were forced to fight their way through the 701 best of three leg preliminary rounds, winning 2-1; 2-1; 2-1.

Mike Strydom drew fellow Queensburgh representative, Quentin Jones, as his partner. They had a first round bye and won the next two rounds in similar fashion 2-1, 2-1 to meet Snyman and Gayanchand in the 701 best of five leg final.

It was an animated final with both pairs eagerly supporting their partner, hoping for a setup and/or checkout. The fourth leg saw Kem hitting the double to send Phillip into celebration as the pair claimed the cup in a 3-1 victory.

Mike Strydom continued his form in the open singles knockout, breezing through the opening rounds to secure himself a spot in the final against Alwyn van Wyk. Alwyn meant business with his three dart checkout on 104 in the first leg and didn’t waste time hitting double 16 in the second leg to give himself a handy 2-0 lead in the best of five leg showdown.

Mike composed himself to take the third leg, but missed a shot at double 10 in the fourth, where Alwyn snatched the opportunity of a 79 checkout in three darts. Final result: Alwyn 3 – 1 Mike.

Rakesh Gayanchand threw the only 180 for the evening.

Tuesday, 1 March is the SAB master singles plus doubles competition at the Hillary Club.
