New committee elected to steer Wanderers BC

The 60/40 board spoils were shared by Julia Venter (R40) and Tom Cloete (R20), while Bob Hayward won the pork roast meat raffle and the lotto was a carryover.

AT Wanderers Bowling Club AGM last Saturday, new office bearers were nominated and elected:

They are: President Mike Flack; vice president Bob Hayward, honorary secretary Lorraine Du Preez (re-elected), honorary treasurer Jeff Bolt, competition secretary men Kim Hawkins, competition secretary for the women Lorinne Hawkins.

Four general committee members were elected: Tommy Simpkins, Clive Symons, Gwen Tait, and Eric Smit who was re-elected. The men’s selection committee will comprise Eric Swanson, Chris Klopper, Jeff Bolt and Steve Van Rooyen with Kim Hawkins as convenor.

The women’s selection committee will be Barbara Neill, Joan Bruce, Gwen Tait and Lorraine Du Preez with Lorinne Hawkins as convenor.

In other matters, Jeff Bolt was awarded life membership, and there was just a nominal increase in membership fees across the board.

Lyn Wild’s pairs took place last Wednesday. Owing to organiser Ronnie Jackson’s recent spate of ill health, he has decided to move to a club nearer home, so his job was taken over by Ken Thomas, who, together with his friend Julia Venter enthusiastically tackled the job at hand. Julia made all the sandwiches singlehandedly and washed all the tea utensils. Ken plans great improvements for the two mid-month tournaments which he’ll now be running, and deserves a massive degree of support for his effort. Expect some pleasant surprises in the way of new sponsorships and additional prizes.

First session was won on 2+3 by Colin Nicholas and Johan Nel, second session on 2+18 by brothers Tom and Andy Cloete, and runaway victors on 4+24 were George Harris and Ken Thomas.

The 60/40 board spoils were shared by Julia Venter (R40) and Tom Cloete (R20), while Bob Hayward won the pork roast meat raffle and the lotto was a carryover.

The men’s handicap singles resumed on Saturday afternoon. Young Paul White played three games during the day – his first a second round catch-up match in the morning against Tom Simpkins who he eliminated 21-12. He then beat Robin Grobler in the quarter finals 21-14, and playing with absolute precision and accuracy, he had no mercy against veteran Dennis Gericke who he beat 21-3 to make it into the finals. The three other quarter final matches saw Derek Stevens (recent winner of the senior singles) beat Clive Symons 21-15, Kim Hawkins beat Eric Smit 21-17 and Dennis Gericke beat Archie Fisher 21-9. The other semi-final match saw Kim Hawkins beat Derek Stevens 21-15 to advance to the finals where he will play Paul White next Saturday afternoon. This should be a cracker as both men are in form and playing brilliant bowls. Let’s have a nice turnout of supporters.

Last Friday’s snowball of R1,800 was not won as Basil Taylor was not present so next month it will be a whopping R1,900 – a very good reason to be at the club with your membership card by 6.45pm in time for the draw in case your number is drawn. The following members won various meat packs: Lamb pack Linda Gibbs, rolled beef roast Clive Symons, pork roast ‘Cave’, rump steak Jeff and Gandi, chicken pack Christine, and chicken Chris Fourie.

In an important notice, members should take cognisance that as from February, the event previously known as the fours skins will be changed to nominated pairs, with a small change in the format. Jeff Bolt is the new organiser, and he has put an entry list on the board. As such, select your partner early and enter your names on the board and rock up en masse to support. Also, assist by spreading the word to other club members and let’s try to get this competition back up to speed with a decent turnout. The date is always the third Sunday of every month.
