Richard and Mike, Lofty and Jo-anne, and Derek are Wanderers BC champions

The following results were achieved since the start of the New Year.

MOST club comps are now in the final stages at Wanderers Bowls Club, and the following results were achieved since the start of the New Year.

In the nominated mixed pairs, Lofty Cawthorne and Jo-Anne Jordaan beat Steve Van Rooyen and Barbara Neill 26-13 in the finals of the event.

In the men’s drawn pairs final, Richard Hendicott and Mike Freeman were too strong for Lofty Cawthorne and Errol Pienaar, taking that title with a resounding 34-8 score line. In the men’s senior singles, Derek Stevens made a surprise comeback after being down 9-0 after a few ends, to clinch that title with a 21-18 victory against Arnie Harper.

The men’s handicap singles got underway on Saturday, 16 January. First round results are Wonke Zandile beat Rob Philogene 21-12, Clive Symons had a walkover from Terry Brown, Derek Stevens beat Jimmy Neill 21-15, Errol Pienaar beat Dirk Roos 21-12, Denis Hearnshaw had a walkover from Arnie Harper, Eric Smit beat Brian Deats 21-13, Terrance McGlynn had a walkover from Robbie Carr who resigned sick after a few ends, Kim Hawkins beat Bob Hayward 21-14, Tommy Simpkins beat Jeff Bolt 21-19, Paul White beat Phil Pieterse 21-7, Robin Grobler beat Lofty Cawthorne 21-12, Chris Klopper beat Russell Shepherd 21-10, Steve Van Rooyen had a walkover from his son Luke, Archie Fisher beat Neville Horner 21-14, Dennis Gericke beat Pat McGlynn 21-15 and Mike Freeman beat Ken Thomas 21-11.

In the second round Clive Symons beat Wonke Zandile 21-7, Derek Stevens beat Errol Pienaar 21-17, Eric Smit beat Denis Hearnshaw 21-19, Kim Hawkins beat Terrance McGlynn 21-13, Robin Grobler beat Chris Klopper 21-8, Archie Fisher beat Steve Van Rooyen 21-17 and Dennis Gericke beat Mike Freeman 21-15.

The match between Tom Simpkins and Paul White was postponed.

Two matches were played in the women’s senior singles round robin. Val McCaffrey beat Louisa McGlynn 21-20 and Joan Bruce beat Gwen Tait 21-19.

The ever-popular breakfast trips was played on Sunday, 10 January with the first session won on 2+13 by Woodlands visitors Harold Dix, Rina Harper and Allen Bouwer. With the same score, Chris Klopper, Russell Shepherd and Eric Swanson took second session. In second place overall, two teams with identical scores had to draw. Richard Hendicott, Anthony Carr and Dave Le Roux won from Robin Grobler, Lorraine Du Preez and Gwen Tait with a score of 4+17. Runaway victors was the team of Steve Van Rooyen, Graham Funnell and Luke Van Rooyen with 4+25. Sportsman’s prize went to Peter Prenger, William Richardson and ‘Herbie’.

Bob Hayward and Richard Hendicott each won R50 on the 100 board draw, and Jimmy Neill and Rob Philogene each won a meat pack.

Roadrunner’s pairs was held on 16 January. Lofty Cawthorne and Dave Faifer were overall winners on 4+17, Tom Cloete and partner took first session with 2+7 and William Richardson and Errol Pienaar took the second with 2+14. Chris Klopper won the meat raffle and Bill Addinall picked up R281 by winning the lotto. Val McCaffrey and Kurt Spack shared the 60/40 board spoils.

On Sunday, 17 January, only one session of the fours skins was played due to rain stopping further play. Sportsman’s prize with 1-5 went the way of Norman Moore, Phil Pieterse, Andy Cloete and Val McCaffrey. Fourth place on 2+3 went to Dennis Gericke, Chris Klopper, Eric Swanson and Peter Prenger. Third place on 8+3 went to Archie Fisher, Bob Hayward, Lofty Cawthorne and Ken Koch, while 2nd place on 8+6 went to Clive Symons, Mike Freeman, Jo-Anne Jordaan and Jackie Freeman. Winners on 9+5 were Kim and Lorinne Hawkins, Tom Cloete and Claude Newman. Jeff Bolt, Russell Shepherd and Tommy Simpkins drew prizes on the 60/40 board.

In an important notice, members are to note that as from next month, this event will be changed to nominated pairs, so select your partner early and rock up en masse to support. The date is always the third Sunday of every month.

On Saturday, 23 January, the bowls AGM is to be held at 5pm. Nomination forms are on the board for members to make their selections.

The snowball of R1,600 was not won on Friday, 8 January as Colin Howes was not present and, with his birthday a few days later, it could have been a nice windfall for this member who is usually present. The various meat pack winners were: Lamb pack – Peter Fox, beef – Themba, pork – popular barman ‘Runga’, rump – Rob Philogene, chicken pack – JP Sparks, chicken – Dan Paruk.

Mike Hussey won the lotto worth R500 with the winning numbers of 1–5–9. Justin Reid won the monthly R50 bowls draw worth R750, Ernie Lochner won R500 and Dirk Roos won R250.

On Friday, 15 January, the R1,700 snowball was again not won as Gary Moffatt was not present. Mitch Mitchley won the lamb pack as well as the roast pork, Rob Philogene got the beef, Mike Hussey the steak, Dan Paruk the chicken pack and Wendy and Jeff the chicken.

Dirk Roos won the main prize of R750 in the monthly bowls draw, Lofty Cawthorne got R500 and PJ Sparks won R250.
