Bowls committee thanks sponsors for support

The next Spur’s Big Jim pair’s competition will be held on 31 January.

AS we enter a new year of bowls, the committee of Wentworth Bowling Club takes the opportunity to thank sponsors who supported the club throughout 2015.

Gratitude goes to Bluff Meat Supply for their contribution to the weekly Friday men’s bowls, Grand Rapid Spur for their support of the monthly Big Jim pairs competition and the Chicken Shack for their contribution to the monthly pairs competition.

Special thanks goes to Rawson’s Properties who sponsor the monthly breakfast trips competition, often going above and beyond with the prizes on offer and who also contributes to the club strip thereby affording members a subsidy.

Support from local business allows the club to continue offering bowlers the opportunity to enjoy a healthy, outdoor outlet on our well maintained greens.

The members also thank Hazel, Tina and Vicky for their dedication and hospitality service to the club; Shorty and Princess for maintaining cleanliness in the club house and Luvuyo and Moses for their relentless work in maintaining the greens and the club surrounds.

Bowlers at the Bluff Meat Supply Friday men’s bowls on 11 December enjoyed the added treat of a special sponsored Christmas lunch. The winners on the day were Colin Nicholas, Brian Smith and Dave Carroll who sneaked ahead of Terry Micholson, Andy Cloete and Ben Venter by one shot.

The sportsman’s prize went to Graham Bransby, Alan Bower and Dirk Roos. Ken Koch was the delighted recipient of the raffled pork and Graham Bransby took home a hearty beef roast. With the large number of bowlers who turned out for the event, three 60/40 boards were drawn. The first booty was shared by Smiler Wilesmith and Jumbo Nel. Brian Smith and Eric Miller pocketed the money from the second board and Ellen Loots scooped both prizes on the third board. Thanks to Ina for the delicious lunch she prepared for the bowlers.

On Wednesday, 16 December members turned out in regalia signifying their allegiance to either the Boers or the Brits to do battle on the greens in this long-standing annual event. The British commander in chief, John Somerville donned his ceremonial dress for the occasion and led his troops to a resounding victory over the Boers.

Dudley Sanders won the spider that was held before the bowling competition. Not to be completely outdone, the Boers won all the draws after the bowls, with Bokka van der Westhuizen and Herby Roux taking the spoils on the board draw and Frank Greyvenstein winning the meat raffle.

The final Bluff Meats men’s bowls held on Friday, 18 December was won by Herbie Hoffmann, Robbie Carr and Dudley Sanders. Hot on their heels were Graham Bransby, Joe McNamara and Bryce Bower.
