Drama as player collapses after bowls competition

The overall winners, and on the perch for R650 in January was the team of Dennis Gericke, Chris Klopper, Eric Swanson and Peter Prenger with the score of 19 + 14.

SEVERAL men’s mixed and women’s club competitions were played at Wanderers Bowling Club.

In the men’s drawn pairs, two semi-finals were played. Richard Hendicott and Mike Freeman beat Eric Smit and Luke Van Rooyen 30-11, and in the other match Lofty Cawthorne and Errol Pienaar had a very tight match against Arnie Harper and Russell Shepherd but managed to emerge winners by a single point at 21-20.

Relaxing in the club after the match, Lofty Cawthorne, who has been struggling with a chest complaint of sorts for some time now, collapsed to the floor with difficulty breathing. Patrons rushed to comfort him and an ambulance and paramedics were called, and Lofty was rapidly transported to RK Khan Hospital where it was later established that his condition had been somewhat stabilised. At time of going to press, there is no update on Lofty’s condition, but his club mates wish him well and a speedy and full recovery.

In other club competitions, in the men’s drawn fours, Steve Van Rooyen, Jimmy Neill, Bill Addinall and Pat McGlynn beat Dennis Gericke, Robbie Carr, Mike Freeman and Tommy Simpkins 30-11; Lofty Cawthorne, Chris Klopper, Phil Pieterse and Dave Faifer beat Eric Smit, Robin Grobler, Derek Stevens and Wonke Zandile 19-8; Arnie Harper, Jeff Bolt, Terrance McGlynn and Dave Matthews beat Kim Hawkins, Errol Pienaar, Peter Prenger and Johan Nel 20-11.

In the men’s senior singles, Derek Stevens made his way into the finals where he will face veteran Arnie Harper when he beat Phil Pieterse 21-9.

The women played two rounds in their senior singles event. In the first round, Joan Bruce beat Val McCaffrey 21-10 and Louisa McGlynn beat Gwen Tait 21-17. In the second round, Joan Bruce played and beat Louisa Mcglynn 22-14.

Wednesday, 16 December was a public holiday but was also the scheduled date for the Lyn Wild’s pairs. Organiser of this event, Ron Jackson suffered a heart trauma the week before this, and consequently the event had been cancelled by stand-in organiser Joan Bruce.

On Sunday, 20 December, the any Fours Skins took place. Perch holders Dora Kruger, Ron Davids, Dave Denbeigh and Judy Page arrived brisk and early to make their challenge for the perch money, currently standing at R600.

It’s one of the unexplainable vagaries of bowls that a team which did so well a month ago seemingly fell apart at the seams and only managed to win two points (out of a possible 20) to take the sportsman’s prize.

First session was won by Archie Fisher, Bob Hayward, Ann Hewer and Ken Koch with a 10+16 and Richard Hendicott, Jeff Bolt, Tommy Simpkins and Russell Shepherd took the second with 9+14.

In second place overall, and winning themselves each a R100 Bluff Spur meal voucher was the team of Clive Symons, Mike Freeman, Jo-Anne Jordaan and Jackie Freeman.

The overall winners, and on the perch for R650 in January was the team of Dennis Gericke, Chris Klopper, Eric Swanson and Peter Prenger with the score of 19 + 14.

Bob Hayward won the meat raffle – a pack of marinated pork rib burgers, and Jeff Bolt (R40) and Eric Swanson (R20) shared the 60/40 board spoils.
