Public holiday offers extra hiking day

DURBAN Ramblers Hiking Club explores Shongweni Dam on Wednesday, 16 December due to the Day of Reconciliation public holiday.

Hikers are to meet at Assagay Hotel, Kassier Road at 9.30am, or inside the reserve close to the canoe club at 10am, for a 10.15am start. As high season rates apply, the entrance fee is R37 for adults, R25 for children (U12) and R25 pensioners (over 60). Payment is by credit/debit card only. It is recommended that hikers also take cash along as a backup in case the card machine is out of order.

Take everything you need to braai afterwards. The club will provide the braais. This hike is graded two, easy.

On Saturday, 19 December hikers will explore Cucumber Farm in Gillitts.

Hikers will meet at St Helier Dam on St Helier Road at 1.45pm to walk through parts of Giba Gorge up to Cucumber Farm and back down to St Helier Dam.

This hike is graded two, moderate.

Meet at Oonagh Whitsitt Pool (Sutton Park) in Sutton Crescent at 8am for an easy suburban walk through Sutton Park, Mitchell Park and Botanic Gardens.

Take picnic lunch, money for tea stop on the way and costumes for those who would like to swim in the pool afterwards. This hike of about 14kms is graded two.
