Bumper breakfast trips puts bowlers in the prizes

Members of the community who would like to try their hands at the friendly game of bowls are invited to join in this development activity.

IT was bowls, bowls and more bowls this week at Wentworth Bowling Club.

Tournaments kicked off with the monthly Chicken Shack any pairs competition on Wednesday morning.

Winners, with a substantial four plus 21 score, were Moses Numba and Dirk Roos. The second placed team of Bob Hayward and Andy Cloete were hot on their heels with a four plus 19. The second session prize went to Chris Pozyn and Wonke Cloete.

Ina Davies and Tommy Cloete were the recipients on the spoils from the 60/40 board draw and Kurt Spack won the raffled meat roast. The final Chicken Shack competition for 2015 will be held on Wednesday, 30 December.

Wednesday afternoon saw the weekly Family and Friends Guesthouse development bowlers occupy the greens. Because of a carry over from last week, two sides were awarded first prize – Ann Bonthrone and Albert van Niekerk for this week and Johnny Mooiman du Plessis and Phil Hill for last week. The biscuit prize went to Johan Nel and Lorraine White. Geanne Mitchell scooped the first prize on the 60/40 board and Ann Bonthrone happily pocketed the second prize.

Members of the community who would like to try their hands at the game of bowls are invited to join in this development activity. Play starts at 3pm. Club coaches are available every Wednesday at 1.30pm to assist new bowlers. Anyone keen to take advantage of this can call John Somerville on 083-512-4440.

The sponsors promised a bumper prize day for the monthly Rawson’s breakfast trips held on Thursday morning and they certainly lived up to their pledge. After enjoying a genial breakfast, bowlers were treated to a host of rewards for their continued support as each participant received a prize. Bringing Christmas to the table, Rawsons awarded festive turkeys to the women’s team of Maree Sadie, Lilah Nel and Jenny Greef, who were the tournament winners. In second place were Norman Moor, Phil Pieterse and Claude Newman who each received a gammon roast. The third placed team of Norman Robinson and Brian and Paula Osman all took home a beef roast. In the true spirit of the season the tournament sponsors carried on giving. Fourth placed bowlers, Wayne Robinson, Johan Nel and Dirk Roos were all smiles when they were each awarded a bottle of whiskey. Dave Rowe and Kurt and Dawn Spack all received a pork roast for their fifth place. Gary Moffat, Jumbo Nel and Moses Numba each took home a Christmas cake as a reward for their sixth place. The next three teams were awarded chicken variety packs. Every other bowler left the club with a slab of chocolate. Members extend their sincere gratitude to Rawsons for their continued support of the club and the game of bowls.

The whiskey raffle was won by Ina Davies and Tomcat Cavanagh and Bob Hayward won bottles of Rawsons red wine. Two 60/40 boards were drawn. Ken Koch and Robin de Gouveia were the respective winners and Kurt Spack the recipient of both second prizes.

The club thanks Cheryl and Sandy Micholson for their regular assistance in the kitchen to prepare the breakfast for the bowlers. Their support is much appreciated. The last Rawsons breakfast trips for 2015 will be held on Thursday, 31 December.

Friday’s Bluff Meat’s men’s bowls was won by Dennis Gericke’s team of Colin Coetzee and Ben Venter who accumulated a sizable plus 14 score. In second place were Chris Pozyn, Brian Hollis and Neil Smith. The sportsmen’s prize was awarded to Gerald Castor Royle, Claude Newman and Ron Addinall. Colin Coetzee added to his day’s rewards by winning the raffled pork roast and Tomcat Cavanagh took home the beef roast. The two 60/40 board spoils were evenly distributed with Gerald Castor Royle and Ina Davies sharing the winnings on the first board and Chris Pozyn and Robin de Gouveia taking home the spoils from the second board.

Next week being the first Friday of the month will see the regular bowlers at Bluff Bowling Club for their monthly competition as the Wentworth Friday bowls organisers take a break from their responsibilities.

Sunday’s Spur Big Jim pairs saw a full contingent of 24 teams take to the greens. The winners on the day were Eric Miller and Dave Carroll (snr). Gary Moffat and Lilah Nel ended the day in second place. Second session prize went to Bokka and Cora van der Westhuizen. The first prize on the 60/40 board went to Dorro Dorrofield with Zoë Dougal taking home the second prize. A beaming Ellen Loots was the winner of the beef roast. The next Spurs Big Jim pairs will be contested on 27 December.

Thanks are extended to competition secretary, Ken Koch, who consistently runs the club’s monthly competitions. His dedication and commitment are appreciated.

The annual prize giving was held on Sunday afternoon. Thanks are extended to Bluff Bowling Club president Dudley Dorrofield and his first lady, June, who attended as guests of honour.

Thoughts and prayers are with Frank Greyvenstein who has once again been admitted to hospital. The club wishes him a speedy recovery Frank and hopes to see him back on the greens soon.

The club will be open for Christmas lunch on 25 December. The bookings list in filling quickly so those wishing to take advantage of Ina’s celebrated Christmas spread are encouraged to book soon by phoning her on 082-768-4644.

The kitchen is open from Tuesday to Sunday for breakfast, pub lunches and Sunday roast lunches. Contact Ina for details. A big screen is available for those wishing to watch sporting highlights.
