Quins 1st team romp to 42 run win over ACC

UMBILO Harlequins Cricket Club’s first team played their fourth 50 over stream one challenge match at Hutchison Park, Amanzimtoti on Sunday, 22 November.

The wicket which is historically docile, easy to bat on, but typically difficult for fast bowlers to get any significant bounce, carry nor much lateral ball deviation off, was quicker than usual which suited Quins’ pace bowlers.

Ball velocity on the outfield was lacking due to overnight rain.

Quins batted first and the usual batting capitulation seemed imminent when the fifth wicket fell with the score on 51 runs. However, number five batsman Christo Beyleveld stood firm along with Sean Edward who scored 26 runs, Jono Ray 13 runs and Ryan Baronet with 15 runs. However it was the Quins captain batting at number nine who was undefeated on 46 runs who top scored, taking Quins total to 187 runs for the loss of eight wickets. Dieter struck five fours and a six over the long leg boundary during a good innings. ACC were in heaps of trouble throughout most of their innings when Quins’ 17-year-old opening bowler Adam Mather, bowling his right arm seamers directly into the moderate southerly wind, dismissed six ACC batsman for 27 runs in a 10-over spell. Sean Edward took out three opposition batsmen for 25 runs in 34 deliveries. Justin Jones top-scored for ACC and was top scorer of the match with 66 runs, being undefeated at the termination of ACC’s innings which was 42 runs short of Quins’ total, with 14 overs remaining. Quins took four match points for the victory plus one bonus point.

The second team played a 40 over challenge reserve match against Silver Saints at Harlequins 1 on Sunday afternoon. Silver Saints were dismissed for a well below par tally of 80 runs in 26,1 overs. Right arm, medium-paced seam bowler Wayne Rittmuller took three wickets for 14 runs and fast bowler Mark Gouveia dismissed three batsman for 11 runs in eight overs. Quins opening batsmen Sheldon Spindler and G Riddle scored 44 runs and 30 runs respectively, to ensure that Quins lost no wickets when they surpassed the target in the 27th over. Quins therefore won by 10 wickets.

Quins third team played a 30 over a side division one match against UKZN 3 at the University of Durban Westville venue. Fortuitously, Quins 3 batted first, accumulating 154 runs, being dismissed with one delivery remaining. Connie Gemishuizen top scored with 55 runs, opener Brett Williams managed 21 runs and Chris Brady got 16 runs. UKZN 3 were dismissed for 74 runs in 14,3 overs. Pierre Horn took half the wickets for just five runs in a fine spell of pace bowling, which comprised 18 deliveries. Josh Brady and Josh Henry took two wickets each. Quins 3, which won by 80 runs, remains undefeated this season and the team is at the helm of division one, and is hopeful of winning this league.

With the exception of the third team, all senior sides have scheduled league matches on 28 and 29 November.

Coaching for U11s and U13s will continue as usual and seniors will practise on Friday at 4.30pm.
