Swoop in to view barn swallows

Hikers will walk around the area, getting right up to the fence of King Shaka Airport and then have a braai before going down to view the swallows, which arrive just before sunset.

DURBAN Ramblers Hiking Club visits the barn swallows in Mount Moreland on Saturday, 14 November.

Meet at 1.30pm at the Barn Swallow site. At the N2 off-ramp, take the Umdloti/Verulam turn towards Verulam.

After just under 1km, turn right at the white pillar indicating Umdloti Estate, Mount Moreland. Follow the road, the rest is signposted ‘Mount Moreland/Swallow view site’. A R20 per person (R10 for conservancy, R10 for braai) donation to the Conservancy is payable. Take along a chair, drinks and braai food. Binoculars are essential for viewing the swallows.

Meet at Union Main Centre in Old Main Road, Pinetown at 8am. This is a revival of an old favourite which has not been done for some time. Hikers will walk from Bartlett Estate to Hammarsdale. Petrol sharing costs R30. This 15km hike is graded three.
