ALTOGETHER there were seven club competitions played at Wanderers Bowling Club last week.

On Friday, Arnie Harper beat Bob Hayward in the men’s senior singles, and on Saturday, he went on to beat Brian Deats to make it into the finals.

Peter Prenger played Jimmy Neill in the same event, and at 18-5 down, Jimmy resigned to give Peter the match. He must now play Phil Pieterse, and that winner plays Derek Stevens for the other finals spot.

In the men’s nominated pairs, Steve Van Rooyen and his son Luke beat the ominous pairing of Roy and Graham Funnell and in the other match, Richard Hendicott and his novice partner, youngster Wonke Zandile made it into the finals by beating Eric Smit and Mike Flack. Well done to Wonke for his great temperament and for applying his learnt coaching skills to the game and to Richard for taking the youngster under his wing and nurturing and encouraging him in a fulfilling way.

The women’s points singles also got underway with two matches taking place. Louisa McGlynn beat Barbara Neill 103-87 and will face Val McCaffrey next, and Joan Bruce beat Lorinne Hawkins 103-97 in a tight match.

In the roadrunner’s open pairs last Wednesday, Chris Pozyn had a good day when firstly he won the meat raffle and then along with spare player, Phil Pieterse they won the overall first prize with a good 4+29. First session went to Eric Smit and Bob Hayward with 2+10 and second session went to Terry Brown and Anne Smit. The lotto was a carry over but Ron Jackson (R40) and Cynthia Addinall (R20) were cash winners on the 60/40 board draw.

In Sunday’s fours skins event, first session on 10+9 went to Eric Smit, Bill Addinall, Trish Overington and Anne Smit. Kim, Nigel and Lorinne Hawkins with Claude Newman won the second on 10+10, in second place overall came Norman Moore, Phil Pieterse, Val McCaffrey and Andy Cloete with a 15+9. Overall winners – and on the perch next month for R550 – was the team of Richard Hendicott, Jeff Bolt, Tommy Simpkins and Russell Shepherd with a 15+11. Eric and Anne Smit (R40) and Dennis Gericke (R20) were the board winners, and Richard Hendicott won the meal voucher which he then donated.

While the fours skins was being played, Wanderers’ men’s fours team of Steve Van Rooyen, Roy, Mike and Graham Funnell were simultaneously playing the semis of the District PNB men’s fours against Sandy Miller from Westville. They won 20-18, putting them into the finals against Robert Mhlongo from Bluff. However this match they narrowly lost 22-21, thus settling for runners-up silver in this prestigious event. Well done.

Last Friday’s R800 snowball was won by Theo Blom. The various meat pack winners were: Lamb pack Arnie Harper, rolled beef Robin Grobler, pork roast Jackie Freeman, rump steak Chris Fourie, chicken pack Brian Gibbs, chicken Porky.
