WANDERERS Bowling Club section entered four men’s and one women’s team in the district men’s and women’s fours which got underway on Sunday.

Happily, three of the men’s sides won their section in a three-match round robin play-off.

Richard Hendicott with Ant Carr, Kim Hawkins and Arnie Harper as well as Steve Van Rooyen with the three Funnell brothers Roy, Mike and Graham both played at Durban and both did well enough to proceed through to the play-offs next weekend. Richard has a bye on Saturday but if Steve and team win on Saturday, they will meet Richard’s side on Sunday morning at Westville. If that should happen, support these members.

The other team making it through was that of Robin Grobler, Jimmy Neill, Jeff Bolt and Mike Flack. These guys had the daunting task of playing veteran district ace Bruce Makkink and his well-drilled team in their final match but all played like pros and managed to pull off an impressive 20-13 win to snatch the section. Well done to all 12 of these men – may they succeed in their ongoing campaign.

Pat McGlynn and Lorinne Hawkins and their respective teams fell short of target.

On Saturday, two club comps got started. In the women’s nominated pairs Lorinne Hawkins and Barbara Neill beat Joan Bruce and Gerrie Jackson 26-21 and Lorraine du Preez and Val McCaffrey got 23-19 against Louisa McGlynn and Tanya Carr. The finals will be on Saturday, 10 October.

In the men’s senior singles, Phil Pieterse beat Errol Pienaar 21-8, Terry Brown beat Chris Klopper 21-10, Jimmy Neill came from behind when 9-19 down to snatch victory from Bill Addinall by 1 shot, Peter Prenger beat Lofty Cawthorne 21-12, Derek Stevens beat Clive Symons 21-18 in a closely contested match which could have gone either way the lead changing hands several times, and Neville Horner beat Robin Grobler 21-13. Bob Hayward had the biggest win of the day beating Ron Jackson 21-5, Colin Howes beat Greg McGuinness 21-18, Brian Deats beat Dirk Roos 21-12. Arnie Harper will play Eric Smit on the morning of Wednesday, 7 October as there was a shortage of markers.

Next Sunday, 11 October is the breakfast trips. This will be followed by a prawn feast for which tickets are required at R100 from Bernadette or Lorraine. ‘Poppie, Toppie and Tjoppie’ will provide music from 1pm. Both are good reasons to stay behind after bowls and enjoy the festivities.

Diarise 6 November as the date when “The Reals” will be rocking in the upstairs lounge. Get your tickets from Patti or Wendy on 031-462-2370 at R120 or R100 for pensioners.

Last Friday the R600 snowball was not won as Brian Hollis was not present. The meat winners were: Lamb pack – Cliffy Waldeck, rolled beef – Graham Jeffs, pork roast – Dave Leuchars, rump steak – Brian Gibbs, chicken pack – ‘Laura’, chicken – Des Demmer.
