Women’s drawn fours goes down to the wire

Winning or losing is never an issue when a great match is played in the true spirit of the game.

IT was a busy week on the bowling greens at Wentworth Bowling Club, which started with the family and friends development bowls on Wednesday afternoon.

Johnny du Plessis and Albert van der Berg ended the afternoon in top spot. Double biscuit winners were Ron Addinall who partnered Stan McKenzie and Eileen du Plessis, playing with Storm Neethling. Brian Brittain and Ron Addinall were the winners of the board draw.

Heritage Day celebrations on Thursday heralded the monthly Rawsons breakfast trips followed by braai day festivities sponsored by Rawsons Properties. Gary Moffat and Lilah Nel, bowling with Moses Ndava, showed why they are the current Oppenheimer champions by accumulating a four plus 20 to emerge as the day’s winners. Dennis Gericke, Keith Wild and Eric Miller placed second. The second session prize went to Lauran, Wonke and Val Wink. The raffles saw Hennie Marais winning the whiskey and a bottle of Rawsons red win. The second bottle of wine was won by Dave Carroll. Three board were drawn and Robin de Gouviea, Andy Cloete, Bill Addinall, Ina Davies and Kurt Spack all benefited financially.

Merriments continued as participants enjoyed the sponsored braai packs and contributed to the animal shelter fundraising by buying into the hamper raffles. A children’s toy hamper was won by Dawn Spack, a kitchen helper hamper by Arnie Harper and a woman’s pamper hamper by Jo-Jo Jordaan. Special thanks to Dylan Kincade from Meridian and Simba chips for treating attendees to packets of Lays.

The Bluff Meats men’s bowls on Friday morning was once again a well-supported event. Alan Ritchie proved that he still has the special touch when he skipped Joe McNamara and Andy Cloete to the top level on the winner’s podium. Gerald Castor Royle, Kurt Spack and Stan McKenzie finished in second place. The sportsman’s prize was awarded to Colin Nicholas, Brian Hollis and Eric Coetzee. Kurt ‘Rabbit Foot’ Spack won the pork roast and the first prize on the first board draw. Maria Cavanagh won the beef roast raffle. Alan Ritchie pocketed the second prize on the first board and Graham Bransby and Ina Davies shared the spoils of the second board.

Spectators were treated to a close contest on Saturday morning when two women’s teams played the penultimate game in the club women’s drawn fours competition. Maria Cavanagh’s team of Cheryl Waterman, Eileen du Plessis and Jenny Greef took on Maree Sadie, Jo-Jo Jordaan, Margaret Walters and Bernie Pool. Maria’s team built up an early lead and by the eighth end were 10–1 ahead. Playing with resolute determination, Maree’s team fought back and in the 16th end they took a 14–13 lead. The lead bounced between the two teams and after the required 21 ends, the score was level pegged on 17-all. This required that an extra end be played. In a nail-biting finish, Maria played a true skip’s shot when she trailed the jack to pick up four shots on back bowls. The women left the green full of smiles, all agreeing that winning or losing is never an issue when a great match is played in the true spirit of the game.

Sunday’s Spurs Big Jim pairs drew a full contingent of bowlers. Terry Michelson and Herbie Roux dazzled their opposition in both their games to emerge as overall winners for the morning. Second place was secured by Maree Sadie and Jenny Greef. The second session prize was won by the club’s green assistant, Luvuyo and Eric Miller. Bernie Pool and Anne Bonthrone shared the booty of the first board draw and the second board winnings went the way of John Somerville and Maria Cavanagh. A third board was drawn. This time Gary Moffat and Dave Carroll were the happy prize recipients. Brian Smith left the club with the monthly meat roast prize and Robin de Gouviea slipped the whiskey prize into his bag. Alan Ritchie won the biltong maker that was raffled. The club thanks Grand Rapids Spur for sponsoring this monthly event.

Thoughts are with Anne Bonthrone whose daughter Sandra is in ICU following a motor accident on Saturday evening.

The monthly Chicken Shack pairs will played on the morning of Wednesday, 30 September. This will be followed by the weekly family and friends development bowls.
