Eric, Anne and Mitch secure breakfast trips title

The sportsman’s prize went to Norman Moore, Phil Pieterse and Colin Nicholas with 0-16.

THE first round of the Wanderers Bowling Club men’s nominated pairs got underway on Saturday, 8 August.

Steve and Luke Van Rooyen pulled off a comeback win by a few shots against Terrence and Pat McGlynn, Gary Moffatt and Kim Hawkins had a walkover from Russell Shepherd and Mitch Mitchley who preferred to attend the local rugby, Chris Klopper and Bob Hayward had a walkover from Keith Wild and his partner Eric Kitchenbrand who was in serious mourning over the recent murder of his son (sincerest condolences, Eric), while Graham and Roy Funnell beat Errol Pienaar and Brian Deats 37-7.

Anthony Carr and Tommy Simpkins beat Bill Addinall and Johan Nel 34-9, Greg McGuinness (drawn from bank for Ron Jackson – away) and Derek Stevens won 30-13 against Jimmy Neill and Robin Grobler, Eric Smit and Mike Flack had to play an extra end to squeeze in by 23-22 against Ken Thomas and Phil Pieterse, Lofty Cawthorne and Archie Fisher won by 23-15 against Arnie Harper and Eric Redman. Clive Symons and Neville Horner beat Johnny Goosen and Mike Freeman 26-14, Richard Hendicott and Wonke Zandile beat Peter Prenger and Jeff Bolt 26-18.

The second round is carded to be played on or before 22 August.

On this date, the women’s nominated pairs will also get underway.

In Wednesday’s roadrunners pairs, a depleted field of only 10 teams competed for the spoils. Colin Nicholas and Johan Nel who lost the first session by an equal score came back strongly in the second to win by 15-5 to take the prize on offer on a count out from Colin Howes and Sharon de Kock. George Harris and Ken Thomas once again took the overall first place with a 4+15. The lotto was not won and will be carried over, and Eric and Anne Smit won R40 and Robbie Carr R20 on the 60/40 board draw. ‘Waco’ won the meat raffle.

In Sunday’s breakfast trips, Colin Howes, Eric Millar and Peter Prenger won first session on 2+15, Keith Wild, Sharon and Gordon Chislett took the second session with 2+12, Neville Roscoe with Adie Fuller and W Butler managed to secure second place with 4+14 but the overall winners were Eric and Anne Smit with Mitch Mitchley with 4+15. The sportsman’s prize went to Norman Moore, Phil Pieterse and Colin Nicholas with 0-16. In the R5 board draw, Louisa McGlynn and Jeff Bolt each won a meat pack and Ernie Lochner and Peter Prenger each won R50.

All women are to note that at the request of Richard Hendicott and Lorinne Hawkins, there will be a meeting of all women at noon on 22 August before the start of the women’s drawn pairs. Diarise this date and arrive an hour earlier than normal as it is expected and hoped that all women bowlers will attend.

Playing away at Empangeni Country Club last weekend, the team of Steve Van Rooyen, Richard Hendicott, Paul White and Bob Hayward won all five of their matches to achieve the winning score and scoop the R7,000 first prize. This makes it four in a row for these men. Dennis Gericke, Eric Smit, Jeff Bolt and Mike Flack played in the same tournament and finished in 7th place out of a full field of 24 teams.

Playing in the KZN singles on Saturday, Lorinne Hawkins managed to win her section and to make the playoffs on Sunday. She unfortunately went down fighting to lose by eight shots to a district player.

The various meat pack winners on Friday, 7 August were: Lamb pack Dave Leuchars, rolled beef Ernie Lochner, pork roast Ian Demmer, rump steak Mitty Chelin, chicken pack Brenda Hook, whole chicken Ian Demmer. The snowball of R900 was not won as William Richardson (233) was not present.

On Friday, 14 August the meat pack winners were: Lamb pack Brian Craig, rolled beef and chicken pack Tommy Simpkins, pork roast and rump steak Jeff Cronje and Wendy, chicken Dianne Swan. The snowball of R1,000 was not won as Brenda Hook (86) was not present. Russell Shepherd won a booze hamper.
