MMA fighter wins bout in first round

He attributes discipline and hard training to his success.

Team Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter Wesley Hawkey won his bout at the Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) at Carnival City in Johannesburg on Saturday, 11 July with a rear naked choke in the first round against Tumsang Madiba.

Twenty nine-year-old Wesley, who hails from the Bluff, recently joined CombatCoaching in Toti. “It has good background experience in fighting,” he said.

Out of 18 professional fights, this was his 12th win against six losses in his 10 years of MMA.

He attributes discipline and hard training to his success and enjoys the thrill of being in the ring.

“I feel I have accomplished more than most fighters in the sense of high profile fights and I fight because I enjoy it, title or no title.”

‘Be prepared and dedicated’ is the advice he gives to youngsters who are thinking of joining MMA.

Team MMA fighters, Cameron Meintjies and Nelson Feiteira will be back in the ring at the Durban EFC at the International Conference Centre on 27 August, along with Craig Ninow, who will challenge for the flyweight title against Zulu Boy.
