Club singles gets underway at Wanderers BC

WITH the men’s interclub league now a thing of the past, the emphasis at Durban Wanderers Club level shifted to getting the club singles matches played in time to nominate winners for the Champion of Champions event, which this year takes place over the first weekend of August at Stella Park.

Last Saturday, the women’s final of the event was due to be played between Joan Bruce and Jackie Freeman.

For personal reasons, Jackie had to withdraw, giving Joan a walk-over to the women’s title.

In the first round of the men’s open singles, Mike Flack had a walkover from Ken Thomas, Lofty Cawthorne beat Kim Hawkins 21-17, Graham Funnell beat Johnny Goosen 21-17, Bob Hayward beat Brian Deats 21-9, Russell Shepherd beat Errol Pienaar 21-18, Steve Van Rooyen beat Tommy Simpkins 21-9, Anthony Carr beat Ronnie Jackson 21-6, Neville Horner beat Chris Klopper 21-13, Arnie Harper beat Jimmy Neill 21-10, Eric Smit had a walkover from Eric Redman, Mike Freeman had a walkover from Terry Brown, Paul White had a walkover from Derek Stevens, Terrance McGlynn beat Robbie Carr 21-8, Clive Symons beat Johan Nel 21-4, Phil Pieterse had a walkover from Dennis Gericke, Roy Funnell squeaked in at 21-20 against Pat McGlynn.

In the second round Lofty Cawthorne beat Mike Flack 21-14, Graham Funnell stole the game from Bob Hayward who was holding game on the last end when Graham trailed the jack for a 21-19 result, Steve Van Rooyen beat Russell Shepherd 21-18, Anthony Carr beat Neville Horner 21-14, Arnie Harper beat Eric Smit 21-14, Mike Freeman beat Paul White 21-12, Terrance McGlynn beat Clive Symons 21-13 and Roy Funnell had a walkover from Phil Pieterse.

The quarter finals and semi finals of the men’s event will take place next Saturday, 4 July. Good bowling to all participants.

The Dan Draper tournament is set to start on Monday, 6 July running through to Friday, 10 July. All games will be 15 ends this year – three on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, two on Tuesday and Thursday. Every team entered wins a prize with cash going to the first five places in each of the men’s and women’s sections. There will be five session prizes for each section for each day with best totalled scores for that day.

Last Friday the snowball was won by lucky Cave James. In the monthly bowls draw lucky, Bob Hayward drew first prize of R750, Mitch Mitchley won R500 and Mike Flack won R250. The various meat pack winners were: Lamb pack – Mitty Chelin; rolled beef – porky; pork roast – Peter Fox; rump steak – Rob Philogene; chicken pack – Brian Craig; chicken – Raymond Smolas.
