LAST Wednesday’s Lyn Wild’s pairs at Wanderers Bowling Club saw overall winners emerge in Lofty Cawthorne and William Richardson who scored 4+24 and gathered an eight (perfect fluke) en route, bringing a smile to Lofty’s face owing to his ensuing insurance claim for a full house.

Dennis Gericke and Chris Klopper, who conceded that eight, actually won the first session with 2+9 and Bluffites Brian and Paul Osman took the second session with 2+11.

Hubby and wife scooped the 60/40 board, with Gerrie Jackson taking the R40 and Ron Jackson settling for the R20. Richard Hendicott won the meat and the lotto was another carry over as no-one had 2-4-6.

That afternoon the final round of the men’s midweek league round robin stage was played. The men did battle at Bluff Bowling Club and although both sides lost, Steve, Richard, Graham and Eric nonetheless won their section and will do battle next Wednesday (tomorrow) at Hillary Bowling Club where they will meet Berea in the semi final. Support for them at this event would be most welcome.

On Saturday, the third round of the men’s interclub league as well as the first round of the women’s Wynn Cup league was played. In the men’s section, the A team managed a 2-5 against Stella Park at home thanks to a great win from Richard, Johnny, Paul and Pat. The B side did well against Hillcrest C at home, scoring a full house 7-0, all three sides scoring well to get a plus 43 points. Dennis and co scored 33-14, Eric and co 24-16 and Anthony and co 25-9. Both the C and D sides shared the points down the middle with 2.5 – 2.5 against Chatsworth A at home and Durban E away; Jimmy’s side with 16-20 and Archie side with 21-17 for the C side and Eric K with a minus four and Errol with a plus four for the D side. Wanderers’ E side scored a full house 5-0 against Firwood at home, thanks to a 209-18 win by Titch and 20-15 win by Colin. Next week is the fourth round, so keep an eye on the board for changes, if any.

The women were chuffed with themselves for scoring a full house 5-0 against Morningside in their first round.

In the Acutts fours skins, played on Sunday, the field was slightly diminished due mainly to the Oppenheimer knockout stages being played simultaneously, but was nevertheless played out with the 10 teams present. Getting the sportsman’s prize with 4-11 was the team of Ken Thomas, Jeff Bolt, Ron Hook and Mervyn Mitchley. Thanks to Ken for standing in for Richard Hendicott who was playing in the Oppenheimer. First session went to Clive Symons, Mike and Jackie Freeman and Brian Hollis with 8+8; second session went to Kim and Lorinne Hawkins, Claude Newman and Barbara Neill with 7+3; in second place overall and each winning R100 Bluff Grand Rapids Spur vouchers was the threesome of Chris Klopper, Peter Prenger and Gordon Chislett. Their skip Dennis Gericke woke up to a ‘not feeling good” sensation. Top spot went to the only team to achieve full points on 20+17 – Lofty Cawthorne, Bob Hayward, Archie Fisher and Ken Koch. This put them ‘on the perch’ worth R400 for next month, and gave Lofty his second win in the week.

Arnie Harper won the roast leg of pork in that raffle, and Greg McGuinness (R40) and Jeff Bolt (R20) shared the 60/40 board spoils.

Last Friday’s snowball was not won as Eric Breedt was not present, and the various meat pack winners were lamb pack Des Demmer; rolled beef roast Patti Redman; pork roast Danny Nel; rump steak Lorinne Hawkins; chicken pack Russell Shepherd; and chicken halves JPS.

Spare a thought for the scribe’s wife, Roz, who is in hospital with a broken hip bone, awaiting an operation pending her being weaned off Warfarin. This was as a result of a fall – the second in 12 days, and the third in 11 months. The operation is tentatively booked for Tuesday (today), so those who are able are earnestly asked to bear her in prayer for this high risk operation.
