Cricket development festival a success in Wentworth

Thanks are also extended to the many volunteers from the community who gave of their time to make sure the day ran smoothly and the children had a wonderful time.

THE Penzance Cricket Academy is a private cricket academy based in Umbilo.

Zayne Bux, who started and runs the academy, along with his dedicated team Lance Padayachee and Siphile Dlamini, approached local businesses from the Wentworth area to sponsor coaching at six Wentworth primary schools to introduce the youngsters to softball cricket.

The participating schools are Wentworth Primary, Durban East Primary, Austerville Primary, Collingwood Primary, Gardenia Primary and Assegai Primary. The PCA, with the help and funding of its sponsors, spent a month training and coaching the grade one, two and threes at these schools and at the end of the month hosted a successful mini cricket festival on Saturday, 28 March at Highbury.

The day was a huge success with a massive turnout from parents and school staff members who supported the children as they competed in their first ever cricket games. It was special to see the turnout. Most of these schools don’t have any sport at their schools due to a lack of funding and manpower.

The children had a great day with each team playing two games. At the end of the festival, teams were presented with medals and some inspirational words from the kind sponsors. The PCA is so thankful for the opportunity and thanks its sponsors Mandlethu Group, AS Bux Auto Electrical, Fabricon, Bevline Mechanical Projects and Rodcon Engineering. Without them the day would not have been possible. Thanks are also extended to the many volunteers from the community who gave of their time to make sure the day ran smoothly and the children had a wonderful time.

The PCA would like to continue to work with these schools, any businesses or individuals who are interested in sponsoring schools for this development programme can email zayne@penzancecricketacademy.co.za
