Night bowls playoffs to light up Wanderers greens

The women are urged to remember that the women's drawn fours competition is to be played on 28 March.

THE Wanderers Alice Munnery night bowls league challenge comes to a conclusion this Wednesday when the playoffs will be staged.

Prize giving will follow immediately after the playoffs, which is expected to be about 8.30pm.

All participating teams are urged to attend, lending support if not playing, and local members are asked to take a plate of snacks. First and second place will be contested by teams Harper and Moffatt. Van Rooyen and Bauristhene play off for third and fourth spots, and Nortje will play Carr for the sportsman’s prize. Additionally, there will be six session prizes handed out to teams McCaffrey, Flack, Hawkins, Carr, Davids and Hewer. It would be great if these teams would attend to show their commitment and support.

Earlier on the same day, the second round of the men’s midweek league will be contested at Wanderers where two local teams will be represented. Durban Wanderers entered two teams in the Port Natal mid-week bowls which started last Wednesday at Westville Country Club. The team of Steve van Rooyen, Richard Hendicott, Graham Funnell and Eric Redman had a convincing 33-13 win over Dudley Dorrofield’s Bluff side, while the other team of Chris Klopper, Robert Carr, Mike Flack and Dave Faifer lost on the last end by one shot to the powerful Clinton Bisset side, also from the Bluff. Games start at 1.30pm and support for the two teams would be most appreciated. This represents a great opportunity for keen supporters and spectators to make a day of it so to speak as following this at 6pm is the final of the Wanderers night bowls league as mentioned.

Meanwhile, the selectors have been busy and the teams for the men’s interclub league, which starts on Saturday, 28 March, are on the board. Indicate your availability as usual.

Unfortunately, the scheduled Lyn Wild’s pairs was cancelled owing to the sodden greens, but news filtering through is that a Wanderers side finished in second place in the Steve Martin memorial tournament at Stella Park over the weekend. Well done to Graham Funnell, Jeff Bolt, Nicola and Charles Bauristhene.

The various meat hamper winners on Friday were:

  • Mutton pack and chunky steak pie Danny Nel;
  • lamb ribs and burger patties Daniel Unger;
  • chicken pack Des Demmer;
  • rump steak Barbara Neill;
  • pork ribs Dirk Roos;
  • chicken Patti Redman.

There was no winner for the R800 snowball last Friday as Bronwyn-Lee Schoonraad was not present. This Friday the snowball of R900 with the normal popular raffle will take place at 7pm. Following this, listen to the new DJ, which is advertised as ‘Music with Paul K’, which comprises 60’s through to modern including party sing-a-long songs. Something different, go and enjoy. Food will be on sale.

The women are urged to remember that the women’s drawn fours competition is to be played on 28 March, so diarise this date. Tabs in at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.
