Three weekend outings for intrepid hikers

Confirm with hike leader before Sunday hike.

DURBAN Ramblers Hiking Club will conduct three guided hikes in this third weekend in January.

On Saturday, 17 January take a hike to Palmiet Nature Reserve.

Call hike leader Linda on 083-353-8319.

This is a slightly new version of an old hike. Meet at the Palmiet Nature reserve at 1.45pm, off Old New Germany Road. The new route to be done is at the top of the reserve.

This 7km hike is graded two, moderate with a vertigo warning.

On Sunday, 18 January explore Umdloti to Virginia. Call hike leader Jon on 082-459-1522.

Confirm with hike leader before Sunday’s hike. Meet at Virginia Airport at 5.30am. Hikers will be driven to Umdloti for an one-way amble starting at 6am, which heads back to Virginia. The distance is about 10km of beach at very low tide, so hikers will be back for a late breakfast. There will be time to look at the sea and enjoy the cool air of the early morning.

This approximate 15km hike is graded one, easy.

A second hike is planned on Sunday, 18 January. This joint Durban Ramblers/MBC/Midlands hike is an alternative to Karkloof Reserve, Howick.

Call hike leader Max Ramseier on 031-783-7876 or 083-968-4434 or Marie on 031-705-3122 or 082-586-0266.

Confirm with the hike leader before Sunday’s hike. Meet the leader on Karkloof Road outside Amber Glen, opposite the WESSA head office at 7.30am to drive in convoy to the Karkloof Club. On this scenic hike, there is an interesting historical site, equivalent to other ones all over the world. Hikers will pass through woodlands and the valley with three waterfalls and many pools. Enjoy this with a B&B (beer and bite) in each hand at R30 per person for trail, all club facilities and safe parking. This 14km hike is graded three.
