Simpkins is Wanderers BC novice champ

Last Friday the snowball of R1,900 was won by Wendy Van Eyk.

THE novice singles championship got underway at Wanderers Bowling Club over the weekend.

In the first semi, Luke Van Rooyen, who had a commanding lead over Thomas Simpkins at 17-7, let his concentration momentarily slip, allowing Thomas to steadily overtake him and win without him scoring another point.

That, short of being dead and buried, signalled a triumphant rally for Thomas who had to face the well-drilled Brian Deets in the final the next day. However, he held on to his spark of genius and luck and won the final 21-14. Well done, Tom.

In the second round of the nominated mixed pairs, Steve Van Rooyen and Barbara Neill had no trouble with Eric and Margaret Kitchenbrand, despatching them 33-4.

With the somewhat disappointing entry in the Warwick nines, with only nine out of 16 clubs entering a side, the Wanderers team was drawn in a section against Durban and Le Domain. Unfortunately, the fours and pairs lost both their games, while the trips won both of theirs – a case of too little, too late. But well done to Steve, Robbie and Shaun on their success.

Last Friday the snowball of R1,900 was won by Wendy Van Eyk. The various meat and hamper winners were: Festive hamper Wendy and Jeff, Christmas gammon Carol Lauderdale, chicken pack Jeff Bolt, rump steak Cave James, pork ribs Pricey, chicken Cindy.

Bowlers are to note that the proposed start of the men’s drawn pairs for last Sunday had to be scrapped because of changes to the nines, so this competition is to be held this coming Saturday and Sunday.
