Gloria, Linda impress at Wanderers’ Lyn Wilds pairs

Last Friday, Jean Edley’s number was drawn for the snowball, but as she was not present, the jackpot now escalates to R1,900 for 28 November.

LYN Wild’s open pairs attracted 16 teams at Wanderers Bowling Club on Wednesday.

Chris Pozyn and Lorraine Smith won the first session with a 2 + 16, and Dennis Gericke and Chris Klopper took the second session with a 2 + 12.

Winning in grand style with a very good 4 + 20 were the women from Woodlands BC, Gloria Rice and Linda Hewer.

PJ Sparks and Eric Kitchenbrand shared the 60/40 board spoils and Gwen Tait walked off with the meat in that raffle. As nobody had the winning numbers of 1-4-6 in the lotto, it is a carry over.

Two matches were played in the men’s novice singles. Luke Van Rooyen sped to a commanding lead of 17-7 against Tommy Simpkins, then got stuck right there while Tommy crept steadily up and eventually overtook him to win 21-17. In the other match, it could have gone either way but first to reach 21 was Brian Deets against a game Wonke Zandile, who made it to 19. Tommy and Brian will contest the final as soon as possible.

Members were devastated at the sad news of the death of Eric Swanson’s devoted wife, Marion after a period of illness. Sincerest condolences are extended to Eric and family. A memorial service will be held for Marion at 2.30pm on Thursday, 27 November at the Methodist Church in Montclair Road, followed by a wake at Wanderers Bowling Club. Take along a plate of snacks.

This coming Friday, 28 November there will be a live band playing in Vic’s bar from 6pm to 22.30pm and as the snowball jackpot now stands at an impressive R1,900, it will be a good reason to attend. On Saturday, 29 November at 7pm for 7.30pm, there is to be a musical meander cabaret show entitled ‘Who am I?’ with the talented Sharon K in the main hall. This show is not to be missed. Tickets are available at R60 each from Mike Flack and attendees are asked to take along a plate of snacks. Dress is casual and a cash bar will be available. As this is a bowls fundraising endeavour, all bowls members are asked to attend and support. As can be seen, the main committee is going all out to provide entertainment and excitement at the club for the benefit of members, so the least that can be expected is for members to show up and support each organised event.

The men’s drawn pairs will be played on Sunday, 30 November. Tabs in by 8.30am to start at 9am. Two games are to be played. As this is the fifth Sunday of the month, there are no other scheduled tournaments, so bowlers are asked to arrive in droves to enter this event.

Last Friday, Jean Edley’s number was drawn for the snowball, but as she was not present, the jackpot now escalates to R1,900 for 28 November, and as mentioned, a live band will entertain.

The various meat pack winners last Friday were:

  • Mutton pack Wayne Armstrong;
  • pork roast and patties Russell Knott;
  • chicken pack Ian Demmer;
  • rump steak Brian Craig;
  • pork ribs Themba Lwana;
  • chicken Robin Grobler.
