Quins open day for prospective rugby players

An open evening is to be held on 19 November at 6pm, for all interested existing and prospective players, including school leavers, to attend.

HARLEQUINS Rugby Club, based on the Bluff in the Durban South Basin, came into existence in 1984 through the amalgamation of Durban Wanderers and Grosvenor Old Boys.

They are currently a first division club where players have the opportunity, if selected, to play in other divisions of KZNRU such as the Sharks U19, U21, Sharks, Springbok Sevens and Springbok sides.

Recent examples of players who emanated from within Quins’ ranks are Renaldo Bothma (Pumas 8th man) who recently received the most improved sportsman award in Namibia ahead of sportsmen who competed at the Commonwealth Games; Howard Mnisi (Lions centre), Sibusiso Sithole (Springbok Sevens, Sharks wing, Springbok); Nico Breedt who, after playing for the Sharks and a two year stint in France, retired as captain of the Free State Cheetahs; Ettiene Fynn; Wahl Bartman (former Springbok captain and now CEO of Fidelity Security); Charl McLeod; Cabous van der Westhuizen and Andre Joubert. These men are among the long list of many that Harlequins Rugby Club can boast about having in the fold at one point.

Skilled and qualified Boksmart-accredited coaches are used to ensure the players are professionally trained and are committed to providing players with the best opportunity of furthering a career in rugby.

Although finishing in a disappointing third position this year, preparations for next year are well underway, with the goal of achieving top accolades in the respective leagues. The newly elected committee have stated that this will be achieved by ensuring that discipline, pride and respect are at the forefront of their conviction.

For the younger folk, the club is structured to cater for junior rugby from U6 through to U18. The junior committee works tirelessly to promote the sport and has had outstanding results. The community is pleased with the manner in which they host tournaments, which are very well supported.
