Single shot victory for Harper’s men in Wanderers’ drawn trips

Deats had a real ding-dong against Lofty Cawthorne, Errol Pienaar and Tommy Simpkins, taking the game to peels 13 after the allotted eighteen ends.

WANDERERS Bowling Club’s roadrunner pairs on Wednesday, 8 October saw 12 teams compete for the three prizes on offer.

First session went the way of visitors Kurt and Dawn Spack with 2 plus 11 while George Harris and Ken Thomas snaffled the second session with two plus 12.

Best on the day though were Keith Wild and William Richardson with four plus 14. Dawn Spack also took the main share (R40) of the 60/40 board winnings with R20 going to Chris Klopper. PJ Sparks won the meat raffle and nobody chose the winning numbers of the lotto, which were 6-8-9, so it is a carryover.

On Saturday, 11 October, the men’s drawn trips got underway with 27 contestants. In the preliminary round, Kim Hawkins, Archie Fisher and Shaun McAlister won 24-15 against Peter Tayfield, Bill Addinall and Dave Faifer. In the first round, Steve van Rooyen, Robbie Carr and Brian Deats had a real ding-dong against Lofty Cawthorne, Errol Pienaar and Tommy Simpkins, taking the game to peels 13 after the allotted eighteen ends.

In the extra end, Brian Deats, leading for Steve, put one close which nobody from either side could improve on or remove, giving Steve’s side an one shot victory.

Chris Klopper, Gordon Chislett and Russell Shepherd had a runaway victory of 21-3 against Eric Smit, Jeff Bolt and Jeff Cronje. Another match which went down to the wire was the tussle between Arnie Harper, Mike Flack and Johan Nel who eventually emerged victorious by a single shot 13-12 against Ken Thomas, Peter Prenger and Dave Matthews. On Sunday afternoon, Kim and team took on Eric Kitchenbrand, Mike Freeman and Luke Van Rooyen and managed to win 23-16. The trips will continue next Saturday afternoon for those still in contention.

On Sunday morning, 12 October, after a sumptuous breakfast, 28 trips teams took to the field for the five prizes on offer. Chris Klopper, Russell Shepherd and Shaun McAlister won the first session with two plus 13. Second session on a count out went the way of Jimmy Neill, Barbara Neill and Robert Atkinson with a two plus 11. The sportsman’s prize went to Dennis Gericke, Joe McNamara and Dave Matthews with 0-17. Lofty Cawthorne, Archie Fisher and Eric Redman did well enough with a four plus 13 to finish in second place overall while the runaway overall winners were Richard Hendicott, Anthony Carr and Stix De Wet with a four plus 31. Richard also won R40 in the board draw, Jeff Bolt taking the R20. Mervyn ‘Mitch’ Mitchley won the meat raffle and Robin Grobler won the whisky.

On Wednesday, 15 October is Lyn Wild’s open pairs in mufti, and Sunday, 19 October is the fours, skins. Call Ron Jackson on 076-034-1055 or Bob Hayward on 076-403-2265 to enter or confirm your teams.

Last Friday the snowball of R1,200 was not won as Brian English was not present. The various meat pack winners were: Mutton pack Ted Green; deboned leg of lamb Buks Swanepoel; chicken pack Billy Lottering; rump steak Dianne Swan; pork ribs Margaret Kitchenbrand; chicken Graham Jeffs.

This Friday sees Sausage with his music machine starting at 7.10pm, straight after the snowball and popular raffles.

Let’s remember the frail, sick and mourning in their struggles to cope with their ailments or losses. Jean Edley, Jumbo Nel, Roz Hayward, Archie Fisher all come to mind.
