Toti cyclists hold their own in Hill to Hill races

The start of the race takes the riders tearing down through the streets of Pietermaritzburg and into Bisley Nature Reserve.

AMANZIMTOTI Cycling Club members tackled the Jeep Hill 2 Hill on Saturday and Sunday.

The 45km race was held on Saturday, it started from Cato Ridge Golf Club and ended at the Polo grounds in Hillcrest. There were about 800 competitors for this race. Sunday’s 100km race began in Hilton and ended in Hillcrest. This is the only one-day marathon between Pietermaritzburg and Durban. Some 750 riders finished this course.

Both days were hot and dusty, the Saturday riders had to contend with a bit of wind as well. Giovanni Rizza gained second place in the masters category and was placed 29th overall for the 45km race. A great achievement for Toti Cycling Club.

Sunday’s race is a long tough haul. The start of the race takes the riders tearing down through the streets of Pietermaritzburg and into Bisley Nature Reserve. There are some bumpy, rocky sections to be navigated through and some mean, mean hills to ascend. The track is good fun and takes a bit of the pressure of the hard hill hauls. All the Toti cyclists achieved pretty good results in this race. A very good challenge to put on the calendar.

The club ride went out from Scottburgh to Renishaw track on Saturday morning. The crew had a good outing with a good crowd of riders. A huge hamburger was the reward after the ride.

The roadies left Engen garage on Saturday morning with nine riders in tow, two turned back at Prospecton. They went on to the Total Garage at La Lucia. The ride was about 100km at a slow, steady pace. Sunday’s ride had five people up, all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed ready to do the trek to Park Rynie. There was lots of glass on the road and that combined with the rough tar, saw a couple of bikes getting punctures. The riders did a steady pace and were home just after 8am.

This Saturday, the mountain biker club ride will be held at Giba Gorge. Ride will start at 6.30am. Go along for some technical riding. There are plenty of different courses for all levels of riders there. The coffee shop makes excellent coffee, milkshakes and breakfast.

Join the club on Thursday evenings for a ride around Lords and legends track. Contact Caryn on 082-357-5287 for more info.
