Three Wanderers teams make it to last 32 of district pairs

Hendicott and Chris Klopper who won by margins of 17 and 20 then lost by 4, but nevertheless did enough to win their section on shot difference.

THE district men’s and women’s pairs started last Sunday on a round robin basis involving the playing of three matches of 15 ends each in sections of four teams.

Wanderers Bowling Club had 10 men’s teams and one women’s team entered, who all played at different venues.

Most of the teams gave good accounts of themselves, winning at least two of the three matches, but three men’s teams ended up winning their sections and proceed to the last 32 playoffs next Saturday afternoon. Congratulations must be given to Steve Van Rooyen and Graham Funnell who won all three of their matches by margins of 17, 20 and 4 shots; to Kim Hawkins and Russell Shepherd who also won by margins of 4, 11 and 12 and to Richard Hendicott and Chris Klopper who won by margins of 17 and 20 then lost by four, but nevertheless did enough to win their section on shot difference. Play resumes at Stella Park for them while Steve and Kim resume at Wanderers next Saturday at 1.30pm. The success of these teams effectively means that Wanderers will have almost a 10% representation in the playoffs. Well done those players.

In club competitions, the finals of the mixed drawn pairs was played out on Wednesday, 3 September. This was between Bob Hayward and Gwen Tait who led for most of the game against Steve Van Rooyen and Barbara Neill in a tightly contested match but succumbed in the last four ends – notably the 18th end when Bob/Gwen were holding six close shots when Steve Van Rooyen drew the shot with his last bowl, and on the 20th end when again Bob/Gwen were holding shot when a drive from Steve shunted the jack forwards to give Steve/Barbara two shots.

Steve and Barbara ended up victors at 20-17.

Dennis Gericke and Mike Freeman played Robin Grobler and Jimmy Neill in the men’s nominated pairs and found themselves 16-10 down and with about five ends to play, clawed their way back to peel at 19-all after the allotted ends. An extra end was played. Dennis/Mike were down when Dennis blasted into the head and burnt it. Thus an ‘extra’ extra end had to be played. Mike Freeman drew a shot which held through the end to give them an astounding comeback win.

Arnie Harper played Ken Koch in the men’s senior singles and had no trouble despatching him at 21-7.

In the Amanzimtoti 75th anniversary tournament last weekend, Richard Hendicott, Jo-Anne Jordaan, Mike and Jackie Freeman won all five of their matches, and came within a hair’s breadth of winning the overall tournament. Just another single end would have done the trick, but as fate would have it, they had to settle for third place, scooping R300 each for themselves in the process.

Just a quick note to members about their dress-code when playing tabs or local competitions in mufti: Please refrain from wearing sandals

without socks. It looks really sloppy and shows a certain degree of lack of pride. Rather wear a pair of flat-soled shoes or sneakers with socks.
