Makeshift teams win sponsored skins

Ken Thomas (R40) and Robbie Carr (R20) shared the 60/40 board spoils.

IN Wanderers Bowling Club club competitions, the following results were reported: Errol Pienaar beat Greg McGuinness 21-19, Chris Klopper beat Johan Nel 21-16, Andy Andraschko beat Neville Horner 21-12 and Ken Koch beat Mitch Mitchley 21-12.

Last Wednesday’s roadrunners pairs attracted 20 teams with a number of new faces and teams. One such team, comprising Johnny Goosen and Steve Van Rooyen who paired up for the first time ever for this event, won with the good score of 4+22. Bob Hayward and Eric Smit finished in second place with 4+15.

The two session winners each achieved identical scores of 2+15, and had either of them won their other session even by a single point, they would have won the second place instead. Dave McCann and Eric Miller won the first, and Koot Potgieter and Derek Stevens won the second. Ken Thomas (R40) and Robbie Carr (R20) shared the 60/40 board spoils and Colin Nicholas walked off with the meat raffle prize. The lotto – worth R93 – was not won as no-one had the winning 5-6-7 combination. It is a carryover for the next event.

Last Sunday’s Rawsons fours skins was somewhat damaged for turnout owing to the fact that four teams of four comprising players who generally support the skins had headed to Empangeni for the weekend to compete in an annual tournament. Nevertheless, Ken Koch, organiser for the day who kindly stood in for Bob Hayward who was one of the many at Empangeni, managed to put 10 teams together and the event went ahead. First place overall went to a team which had never played together before, namely Aroo Mudley, Dave Faifer, Brian Hollis and Ron Gillespie which puts them on the perch for next month. Mary Rust and her team of Derek Stevens, Denis and Chantal Hearnshaw managed to take second place. First session went to Andy and Brenda Andraschko with Ron Hook and Russell Shepherd while Lofty Cawthorne, Ken Koch, with newcomers Dave and Maria Arnold took the second session.

The sportsman’s prize went to Norman Moore, Phil Pieterse, Johan Nel and Wonke Zandile/Val McCaffrey who played a session each. Mary Rust also won the meat raffle, and Keegan Bauristhene (R40) and Anne Smit (R20) shared the 60/40 board offerings.

Note that there will be no skins next month as it clashes with the PNB pairs semis and finals date which is scheduled to be held at Wanderers BC, who are the sponsors for the event.

As for the Empangeni tournament results, of the local teams who attended, Steve Van Rooyen and team of Richard Hendicott, Bob Hayward and Shaun McAlister won it for the third year in a row. Dennis Gericke’s team of Pieter Coetser, Jeff Bolt and Mike Flack finished in fourth place. Teams Freeman and Pozyn finished further down the line.

Novices should remember 23 August, when Stella Park will be hosting a novice pairs tournament every Saturday starting at 10am. Any novices interested in playing should call Trevor Varkevisser on 082-451-6566.
