Golfers toast to completed bar renovations

The two nearest the pins were won by Mike Igesund on the seventh and Johan van Rensburg on the 17th.

THE newly renovated pub was officially re-opened at Amanzimtoti Golf Club (AGC) on Saturday, with chairman Mike McGregor thanking all sponsors who have contributed towards the improvements.

He also acknowledged the members and staff for their patience and understanding while the work was underway.

From the gardens surrounding the clubhouse to the smallest light fitting, every single contribution is most gratefully accepted and appreciated, and AGC extends its deepest gratitude to all those involved in these wonderful improvements to the club.

Several league matches took place over the last week, starting with the two women’s teams that travelled to Selborne to do battle, Toti taking on Southbroom and Amanzi coming up against Port Shepstone. It is noteworthy that both these opponents currently lead their respective logs, and AGC’s girls did well to come away victorious on the day, both sides posting four and two wins over their competition. The club’s teams have had the same results for every match so far. The next match is scheduled for 7 September at Port Shepstone, and both teams have everything to play for in this vital encounter.

On Monday the men’s senior team hosted the league at home, and did not make full use of local advantage, only pipping Royal Durban by four points, yet still managing to claw their way back into second spot on the league table, 16 points behind Bluff.

Wednesday’s IPS was well supported by 37 players, with Peter Wallace and D van Wyk both scoring 40, but Peter winning the count out for top spot, and Elsune Roode coming in third on 37 points, followed by Buff Berry on 36 points.

Friday’s nine hole Sundowner was a small affair, as the club played host course to the business forum golf day. Only 18 players vied for the meat, with John van der Spuy on 22 beating Patrick Fowler by one point.

On Saturday the men’s competition had a good field of 81 players, and played a fourball alliance format. Top spot, by way of a count out, went to Dave Richardson, Brian Stephen, Pat Vickers and Jimmy Corr on 100 points, followed by Norbert Dupont, Nic Brits, Mike Halse and Hu Turnbull. The third place went to Robert Mott, Gavin Milne, Kalvin van Rensburg and their ghost Tommy on 98 points. The two nearest the pins were won by Mike Igesund on the seventh and Johan van Rensburg on the 17th. Jimmy Corr won the jackpot and John van der Spuy picked up the attendance draw.

The women played the second round of the Walter Bruyn Trophy, and Gerda Heydenrych followed up on her great round last week to claim the trophy on 152 nett, followed by Delene Berry on 153 nett. The IPS competition was won by Gill Symons on 40 points, with Jebby Dyson coming in second on 36 points. Lass Davis and Cheryl Flutter both had two clubs, on the fourth and seventh holes respectively.

This coming Sunday the men’s Premier and Allerton teams play the next round of their leagues, while the B team has a bye. The A side plays at home against Umhlali, while Allerton takes on DCC 2 away at Durban Country Club. Given that the B side are not playing, it would be great to see them join the regular supporters and turn out in force at home to cheer on the Premier boys. Good luck to both teams.
