Good day for Gary, Lilah at Wanderers pairs

First session actually went the way of sisters Colleen Blenner-Hassett and Daphne Els with a 2+7.

THE Wanderers Bowling Club monthly roadrunners pairs was held at the club last Wednesday, attracting 22 teams.

Bluff visitors Gary Moffatt and Lilah Nel almost re-wrote the record books by very nearly winning both sessions with a whitewash.

In the first session, they demolished Colin Howes and Sharon De Kock 27-nil over 10 ends. Then in the second session, they were 14-nil up, playing the last end against the father and son team of Raj and Russell Rangiah. Somehow, however, one of the Rangiah bowls ended up closest to the jack, giving Gary and Lilah a 14-1 win with a total runaway score of 4+40, which was more than enough to garner the first place.

At prize-giving, pushing his luck to the limit, Gary was the only punter to choose the winning Lotto numbers of 2-3-8 which netted him the jackpot of R200.

Another remarkable event took place on the day and that was when not one but two ‘eights’ – otherwise known as ‘perfect flukes’ – were achieved. In the first session Alex Fisher and Tony Hoggins scored one, and in the second session sisters Colleen and Daphne also scored one. What was even more remarkable was that each of these was conceded by the same team of Colin Nicholas and his partner Alan Bruce. This rare occurrence does not happen too often but twice on the same day by the same team is rare indeed. Colin jokingly remarked after the match that the insurance companies will probably be lobbying to ban these two from bowls for life before they put them out of business.

First session actually went the way of sisters Colleen Blenner-Hassett and Daphne Els with a 2+7. Hubby and wife Ken and Sonja Koch won the second with 2+18. The Kitchenbrands creamed the 60/40 board, Honey taking R40 and Eric the R20. Bob Hayward won the meat raffle, comprising chicken pieces and minced beef.

Next Wednesday is Lyn Wilds Pairs, again in mufti. Phone Ron Jackson on 031-464-7990 if you would like to enter. Saturday, 21 June is the start of the men’s and women’s open pairs starting in the morning. There are nine men contenders and one woman entrant. The following weekend (28 and 29 June) 11 senior men compete in the PNB senior singles. The club wishes them all good bowling.

Owing to the early deadline this week due to the public holiday on Monday, it was not possible to report on the events of the weekend club comps, the Rawson’s fours skins nor the results of the snowball draw. These will be recounted in the next issue.
