Wanderers BC men win two league divisions

The "B" side had already clinched their win of the fourth division last week, but made no mistake again by scoring a further 5-0 against visitors Bluff B.

IN a cracking finish to the men’s interclub league on Saturday, Wanderers Bowling Club’s A team players pulled off the exact result needed to clinch the second division by scoring 7-0 against log leaders Umhlanga on their home turf.

Each of the three sides, skipped by Lofty Cawthorne, Dennis Gericke and Richard Hendicott, won by eight or nine shots to overtake Umhlanga and win the division outright. This is great news for the club and means they will compete in the first division next year (formerly known as the ‘premier league’) against the biggest guns in the district. Well done to those players.

The B side had already clinched their win of the fourth division last week, but made no mistake again by scoring a further 5-0 against visitors Bluff B. Steve Van Rooyen won 35-11 and Arnie Harper won by 26-11. This will put them in the third division next year, which is also good news for the club as it will mean fielding an extra team to meet the criteria of the third division.

The C team playing away to Toti were also in with a chance of promotion, going into the final round a mere two points off the pace and in third place. When they too pulled off a 5-0 win, hopes were high of a triple whammy until it was learnt that the two teams above them also managed 5-0 wins, thus retaining their status quo. This was a great effort by Andy Andraschko and Jimmy Neill and their teams who scored 27-13 and 19-18 respectively at the death.

The D side playing Wentworth at home narrowly missed out on the bonus point when Errol Pienaar’s side won 24-20 by four shots and Robbie Carr and co lost 14-19 by five shots in a most unfortunate set of circumstances. The E side, playing Hillcrest at home scored the bonus point thanks to a 25-15 win by Eric Kitchenbrand and team. Unfortunately Ken Koch’s men suffered a six shot loss. The club was abuzz with excited chatter after the teams all gathered there, and a magnificent selection of salads with roll, plate and cutlery was supplied by the club in a bring and braai celebration extravaganza, which, after watching the Springboks’ great victory over a World XV rugby side was much enjoyed. It is not known how the women fared in their interclub challenge.

Only one result was reported for club competitions. In the women’s senior singles, Sonja Koch defeated Mary Rust 21-14 and advances to the final, awaiting the outcome of the match between Gerrie Jackson and Heather Beselaar.

Sunday’s popular breakfast trips attracted a good field of 28 teams. The 60/40 board was won by Jeff and Rob (R40) and Bob Hayward (R20) and Colin Howes won the meat raffle. Hennie Geldenhuys, Ernie Lochner and Eleanor Stewart won the sportsman’s prize with a 0-48. Either of the two session winners would have won the main prize if either had won the other session but Dennis Gericke, Joe McNamara and Dave Faifer peeled the second session after winning the first with a 2+22. Keith Wild, Mike and Jackie Freeman who lost their first session quite severely had an amazing 26-0 win in the second to take that prize. There were two teams with overall 4+22s, Richard Hendicott, Stix De Wet and Robbie Carr taking the overall with a pairs team of Kim Hawkins and Trevor Williams taking second place with the same score.

Next Sunday is the Rawson’s fours skins tournament. A notice has been put up on the board with a list of teams that usually play in this event. Edit this where applicable or call Bob Hayward on 076-403-2265 to enter a team. There are prizes to the first 12 places.

Next Wednesday is the roadrunners pairs in mufti. Ron Jackson can be contacted on 076-034-1055 to enter.
