Mowat Park High School will rise again [LETTER]

It’s alarming, heartbreaking and deeply disappointing to witness the depths to which this sacred relationship has descended.

EDITOR – In response to an article published in your paper headlined: Suspension of principal and teacher following allegations of pupils sexual abuse at Mowat Park High School. In 1965 I was the very first pupil enrolled at Mowat Park, at a time when we had unbridled respect for our teachers and they for us.
It’s alarming, heartbreaking and deeply disappointing to witness the depths to which this sacred relationship has descended.
It was unthinkable that any of our teachers would ever violate the code of ethics under which they worked. We felt safe and protected, knowing that any complaints we might wish to voice, would be given a fair hearing, and be acted upon accordingly. Our ‘complaints’ were more in the order of teenage whines and moans about homework volumes, required dress codes or other students.
How has the Mowat Park we once attended and supported, whose teachers inspired and guided us, who fiercely protected our rights and interests, slipped its moral coil and descended to being the subject of poorly addressed sexual misconduct allegations?
In the words of my favourite former teacher, who made teaching at Mowat Park her life’s work: ‘Cry my beloved school’.

Comment from the first teacher appointed at Mowat Park High School in 1965: As the first teacher appointed to Mowat Park in January 1965 and having taught there for over 50 years, I have a message for the staff and learners.
Thank you for your unrelenting commitment and selfless dedication to our school. All past learners and staff appreciate all that you are doing during this difficult time.
So the Mowat magic is sadly tarnished for now, but our founder, Olorenshaw instilled in us the motto that you proudly wear – knowledge with understanding. This means that you all have a long road ahead to restore and to rebuild our name and reputation.
To those young women who had the courage and confidence to speak out, you have my respect, admiration and gratitude. There are many strong and principled young women at Mowat Park. Success is only measured by the number of times you are beaten down, only to get up again.
You can do it. Many past staff and hundreds of past learners are behind you.
I wish I could be back to help you.
‘Carpe diem’ – seize the day.
