EDITOR – While Bluff ward councillor Prinsloo is to be commended for applying pressure and direction on Parks and Gardens staff to poison the weeds which have been allowed to flourish in the gutters of many of our roads (SUN, April 7), the situation is symptomatic of the state of governance in Durban.

In years and decades past, it was never necessary for a councillor to have to intervene in such issues.
Council officials were pro-active and adhered to routines which saw that weed poisoning, grass trimming, tree pruning and the like were timeously dealt with.
The fact that weeds nearly a metre high have been allowed to flourish along our roads shows that council officials are not doing their jobs. Of course, the usual excuse is that they are under-staffed. But that is nonsense.
The reality is that there is a dearth of work ethic among those who occupy the hierarchy of posts in eThekwini Municipality and who are more interested in servicing their empires than implementing the motto they proclaim: Batho pele – we serve.
