How will illegal poster owners be prosecuted?

Ward 66 councillor JP Prinsloo responds to a reader's questions

EDITOR – With regards to ward 66 councillor JP Prinsloo’s article on the posters removed, we applaud his efforts and acknowledge that the community can see his effort.

Can he explain how the offenders will be prosecuted and what the charge will be?

I stand to be corrected here, and he has also not given much information about who assisted him, but for a person to be prosecuted, a member of the municipality would have to be present to photograph and record each poster.

Only then would the municipality have a case.

Nuts and bolts of signage prosecutions explained

EDITOR – Herewith my response to the questions:

1. How will offenders be prosecuted and who provides assistance with removal of posters??

Over the past few weeks, residents of ward 66 have assisted me with the removal of all illegal signs.

Signs are counted after removal and captured onto a spreadsheet and the information is sent to the signage department for prosecuting.

South Durban Basin ABM team assists with following up queries and ensuring the signage department fulfils its mandate.

2. What will they be charged?

Offenders may be fined anything between R1,000 up to R10,000. The fine is dependent on the severity of the violation, including the number of illegal signs flighted, has this person been prosecuted for the same act before and so on.

Trained officials within the signage department are responsible for the issuing of fines and the prosecuting of offenders.

If you have any questions please, do not hesitate to contact me.
