Don’t be fooled by appliance repair claims

He now had my machine and my deposit and quote charge, so I just shut my eyes, turned off those alarm bells and paid.

EDITOR – I have a dishwasher which works very well but has stopped heating its water.

I called a repairman who advertises free quotes and a 20% discount.

He duly arrived and after a five second switch-on and a glance from about a metre away with the door closed, informed me that it was in fact the programme that was faulty and that it would have to be replaced. He’s better than McGyver.

He advised it could only be done in the workshop as it had to be connected to a test bench. I asked for the quote in writing and was told that I just had the free part. The part in writing was R450 upfront. The 20% discount was already in the quote. In spite of alarm bells, I paid.

The machine was collected. I was now charged another R1 300 deposit to pay for the spares. He now had my machine, my deposit and quote charge, so I just shut my eyes, turned off those alarm bells and paid. After a six week nightmare, at least 30 telephone calls and a visit to the premises (wrong address originally supplied on a number of occasions), the machine was finally delivered for the second time. They were in a hurry. I was assured that this time the machine had been on test at the agents, the balance of R800 collected and off they shot.

Yep, you’ve guessed right – nothing had changed.

I have a dishwasher which works very well but has stopped heating its water.
