Council neglect responsible for urban decay

So we can blame residents for a lot of things - but one can blame the council for a lot more.

EDITOR – I refer to the letter published in Southlands Sun last week headlined ‘Rubbish is your responsibility’.

That rubbish is your responsibility and I agree that some residents do not have pride in their area, as is witnessed by the number of black rubbish bags dumped on the roadside where one acts like a magnet for many more.

One must not lose sight of the fact that we pay rates for services. Kenyon Howden Road is a good example of council neglect, with the curbs hidden with silt and vegetation, also the N2 bridge. Yet Sarnia Road has had four dedicated street cleaners employed five days a week for the last year and South Coast Road has a large contingent of contract personnel all grouped together – one moving, the rest watching. All are being paid from our rates and all the residential roads are in a disgraceful state.

Our roads are being destroyed by contractors that dig them up and don’t have the ability to reinstate them. Kingfisher Road is a good example, with the rumble section and the destroyed storm water culvert. The Woodlands water tower warning light has been out since November 2012, which has been reported three times and is still not fixed.

So we can blame residents for a lot of things – but one can blame the council for a lot more.
