New principal creates holistic learning experience

Benjamin Mpangase believes his holistic approach to teaching learners enables them to achieve great success.

NEWLY appointed principal of Bluff Christian Academy, Benjamin Mpangase, is no stranger to his learners and has created a place of learning, love, encouragement and understanding as he heads the school, taking it to new heights.

In January 2018, Mpangase was appointed at the school to help boost learners’ mathematics results, which was his speciality subject during his 23 years of teaching in public schools.

Creating a holistic learning experience for learners, coupled with his experience in teaching maths, the father of three helped learners achieve great success when they upped the mathematics pass rate to 100% in 2018.

Now, as he steers the ship as principal, Mpangase says he will continue to lead his school like he does his home.

“We want to do something different with learners, and personally, I have a different approach. It is a holistic approach, and I encourage teachers to also be holistic in their approach to teaching.

“I am blessed to be able to work with teachers who understand that learners need to be developed in all spheres of life. We want to see them changing and being transformed as they grow.

“Transformation, to me, is a change in position. They must be critical thinkers. They were created for a specific purpose. As teachers and a school, we need to support them to achieve amazing results in order for them to be what they were created for.

“As a principal, I have my own vision. I believe that when God creates a person, he gives that person a vision. Immediately after that, there should be a provision. Vision can be known and seen, but provision is always hidden.

“We have learners who will say, ‘I want to be a doctor or an engineer, but my problem is my background or I don’t have money, therefore I won’t be able to‘. No, this is not true. Pursue your goals and vision. God will make a way. God has given you a hidden provision,” he said.

Highlights of his tenure at the school include being invited by the mayor for playing a part in one of the schools in eThekwini with a 100% pass rate.

Other accolades include a trophy and certificate for the same achievement by the Umlazi District and for being one of the best-performing schools making it to the top 10, as well as a trophy for being in the top 10 performing schools in Durban Central.
