Aimed at bolstering the local economy by empowering emerging street traders, the initiative seeks to provide a stable platform for those who have struggled to secure permanent trading structures in the city.

Despite a low turnout for other informal traders, those present thanked the council for providing such a magnificent trading space for the street vendors.

After years of challenges and uncertainty, eight street traders are set to occupy their designated stalls, starting tomorrow. These traders will finally have a legal and stable environment to conduct their businesses, offering a wide array of goods and services to the community.

The Montwood Business Hub aims to create a supportive ecosystem for informal traders by providing accessible and well-equipped trading tables. The hub not only enhances the livelihoods of these entrepreneurs but also enriches the local commercial landscape.

One of the traders, Bongani Mtolo, said, “This is a historic day for Montclair. The Montwood Business Hub provides a pathway for street traders to thrive within a regulated framework, contributing positively to our city’s vibrancy.”

The initiative has garnered widespread support from the community, with many residents expressing optimism about the positive impact it will have on both the local economy and social cohesion. Small business owners have also welcomed the move, seeing it as an opportunity to foster entrepreneurship and diversity in retail offerings.

Ward 64 councillor Gavin Hegter announced that the stalls would be transferred to the traders tomorrow (June 21).

“I will be submitting an application to eThekwini Municipality for a containerised ablution block and a six-metre container to provide storage for the traders’ goods. Additionally, we are exploring the possibility of installing additional tables for the informal traders. Only those who have been allocated tables will be permitted to operate,” Hegter said.

Each trader participating in the Montwood Business Hub has undergone training sessions on business management and hygiene standards to ensure compliance with municipal regulations and best practices. This proactive approach is aimed at maintaining a high standard of service while integrating informal trading into the formal economy.

As the stalls open for business tomorrow, Montclair residents can look forward to a bustling hub of activity, showcasing a variety of goods, ranging from fresh produce to handmade crafts.

The Montwood Business Hub represents a significant step forward in Montclair’s efforts to embrace and support its informal sector while promoting economic resilience and community development.
