Sandra, a seasoned runner, expressed her deep connection to the sport. “I’ve participated in the SPAR Women’s Challenge multiple times over the years. Running is my sanctuary – a time for reflection, prayer, planning and feeling invigorated. This year’s event is special as I’ll be running with my sister, aligning with our 2024 running goals,” she shared.

Sandra’s passion for running began in the 90s with company relays, fuelled by her husband’s love for the sport. It soon became a family affair. By 2009, Sandra had fully committed to her passion, completing three consecutive Comrades Marathons from 2009 to 2011.

Susan’s story is different but equally inspiring. “I started running in August 2022 after struggling with poor health and weight issues, which led to personal health problems. Watching my sister and brother-in-law incorporate sports into their daily lives and social activities inspired me to join their 05:00 runs whenever possible,” Susan explained.

Susan’s persistence has yielded impressive results. “Running has become a personal journey of accomplishment for me. Each time I improve my pace, run faster or complete a race, I feel a sense of achievement. Running is now a daily investment in myself, helping me become the best version of me so I can meet my life responsibilities fully,” she added.

For both sisters, the SPAR Women’s Challenge has become a cherished event. “The challenge is a fun run that’s an integral part of our running calendar. SPAR always ensures the goodie bags at registration are filled to the brim,” Susan noted. She also highlighted Sandra’s crucial role in her running journey, providing support and celebrating milestones together.

As they prepare to run side by side, Sandra and Susan embody the essence of the SPAR Women’s Challenge – community, support and choosing yourself!
