Umlazi District calls on high school poets for first digital anthology

There is still time for learners to submit their poems for the Umlazi District's first-ever digital anthology.

UMLAZI District is calling on all aspiring poets, from Grades 8 to 12, and those who are English home-language learners, to showcase their literary prowess in the district’s first-ever digital anthology.

The initiative, led by Sunitha Singh, a reading programme coordinator and teacher at Amanzimtoti High School, aims to celebrate the wealth of talent and creativity among young people. Singh said nurturing these abilities is crucial, and what better medium to do so than through the power of words?

“Poetry is important as it gives expression to how one feels. The transformative power of poetry is incredible – it provides learners freedom of thought, and those thoughts give reason to an art form that continues to inspire,” said Singh.

Each learner may submit one poem, with a maximum of 25 lines, on any topic. Poems must be typed and sent as a Word document to singh@totihigh.co.za. It should include the poet’s name, surname, grade and school with the submission. Suitable poems will be chosen for publication in the anthology. The deadline for submissions is today, April 30.

Singh said the anthology will give recognition and an opportunity to so many learners across schools in the Umlazi District to have their masterpieces published on a digital platform.

“Our young poets have such talent, and this talent needs to be nurtured and appreciated, and I believe that this initiative will do that just that. Our goal is to encourage young voices to be heard and appreciated.”
