Blood drives increase as holidays approach

In anticipation of a surge in demand for blood, the South African National Blood Services has ramped up its blood donation services ahead of the Easter holiday period.

THE South African National Blood Services (SANBS) is ramping up its efforts to fortify blood reserves nationwide, anticipating a surge in blood demand during the holiday period.

SANBS has launched a series of initiatives to address the anticipated requirements.

In response to the heightened demand, SANBS conducted two blood drives this past week, showcasing its dedication to ensuring an ample blood supply for patients in need. The initial drive occurred on March 20 at the Abbaquar-Sans Dream Centre, followed by another on Human Rights Day (March 21) at the Bluff Towers branch, in collaboration with the Retaliate (RTL8) community group.

“We acknowledge that the current operating hours may be constrained for some donors who are due to donate or would like to donate for the first time,” said Siemi Prithvi Raj, SANBS executive for Transfusion Donor Services and Marketing.

“This extension comes at a crucial time for SANBS as we look to expand our donor base and increase blood collections ahead of school closures and the Easter period,” Prithvi Raj added.

Since students constitute a significant portion of the national donor base, school holidays often coincide with strained stock levels.

“With the support of our donors, we aim to gather ample Group O blood, representing the universal donor type – Group O blood can be administered to patients of any blood group, be it A, B, AB or O,” highlighted Prithvi Raj.

SANBS urges all eligible donors to step forward and contribute to the critical cause of saving lives through blood donation.
