Enthusiastic learners from the Wentworth Youth Centre actively participated in the trip, which garnered support from various stakeholders, including eThekwini South Youth in Business, the Department of Social Development, the Deprived Youth Centre, the National Youth Development Agency, the Department of Health, the Department of Arts and Culture, and the SA Youth Council. Together, these organisations collaborated to craft a comprehensive and impactful experience for the youth.

Celeste King, chairperson of eThekwini South Youth in Business, explained that learners underwent an extensive life-skills programme before the trip to equip them with essential tools for personal growth.

“Topics covered ranged from self-development and cultural awareness to entrepreneurship and effective decision-making, aiming to not only impart knowledge but also to foster confidence and resilience,” said King.

The daily schedule during the trip was meticulously designed to optimise learning opportunities and engagement, starting as early as 05:00 and concluding as late as midnight.

“Activities included invigorating aerobic training sessions, followed by breakfast and intensive life-skills workshops. Learners were engaged in various educational sessions throughout the day, interspersed with lunch breaks and free time. Evenings were dedicated to further enrichment through workshops, discussions and cultural performances,” said King.

Angelina Jacks, a participant currently pursuing a course in clothing and manufacturing processes, described the programme as a transformative experience that pushed them beyond their comfort zones.

“I’m generally a very quiet and reserved person, but when I was with everyone, taking part in the sessions and games, I just came out of my shell,” said Jacks.

King highlighted the notable transformation observed in the learners throughout the workshops, with testimonials at the end of the journey underscoring the impact of the experience. Previously hesitant learners were seen actively engaging in every activity, reflecting newfound confidence and enthusiasm.

Ultimately, learners returned home enriched with knowledge, confidence and cherished memories, marking the culmination of a successful and rewarding life-skills programme trip.
