Pawsitive results for rabies vaccination drive

The state vet vaccination drive saw a total of 1 361 animals vaccinated in the Durban South area.

IN an effort to combat the spread of rabies and safeguard both pets and humans, eThekwini Municipality recently orchestrated an extensive vaccination campaign for the Durban South area from March 4 to 8.

The initiative commenced in Merebank from March 4 to 5, proceeded to Wentworth on March 6, and concluded the vaccination drive on March 7 to 8 on The Bluff.

Residents from these areas responded to the municipality’s call, showing up to shield their fur babies and themselves from the lethal disease. Simplifying the process, participants could conveniently park their cars, provide their details and have veterinarians administer the vaccine to their pets right at their vehicles.

Queen Duma, an animal health technician from the Department of Agriculture under the Veterinary Services Directorate, expressed satisfaction with the turnout despite not meeting their target.

“Throughout the duration of the campaign, a total of 1 253 dogs and 108 cats received their rabies vaccinations. While this falls short of our initial target of 3 000 plus pets, it’s important to recognise the challenges faced by some community members,” said Duma.

She attributed the lower turnout to various factors, including lack of transportation, conflicting work schedules, children being in school and the ongoing municipality strike.

Nevertheless, Duma emphasised their continued dedication to preventing and controlling the deadly rabies disease, which poses a significant risk to both animals and humans alike.
