Wentworth Youth Centre empowers disabled with job-readiness workshop

The centre also assisted participants in uploading their CVs onto various job-seeking platforms.

IN a bid to empower young and disabled individuals in the community, the Wentworth Youth Centre recently hosted a job-readiness workshop.

The workshop was designed to equip participants with vital skills essential for entering the workforce. These skills included crafting concise one-page CVs, honing interview techniques and gaining insight into workplace dynamics and expectations.

The initiative not only tackled the unemployment hurdle faced by the youth but also underscored inclusivity, ensuring that disabled individuals receive the necessary support to thrive in their career pursuits. Celeste King, chairperson of eThekwini South Youth in Business, spearheaded the workshop alongside the staff of the Wentworth Youth Centre.

“The workshop began with an emphasis on the importance of a well-crafted CV. Participants were guided through a process of highlighting their skills, experiences and achievements. We often find people tend to jam pack their CVs with information overload that hides the useful and relevant information,” said King.

After the CV preparations, the workshop delved into interview techniques and strategies. King said that participants were instructed on effectively highlighting their strengths and adeptly responding to common interview queries. Additionally, practical scenarios were enacted to better equip the participants.

The Wentworth Youth Centre assisted the participants in uploading their updated CVs and details onto various job-seeking platforms, including the government job portal. King emphasised, “I believe it is imperative to be proactive in helping the young and disabled to ensure they are given a fair chance.”

The workshop garnered positive feedback from the community, drawing participants from The Bluff, Wentworth and Merebank. King revealed that plans are underway to organise another workshop in the upcoming months, furthering the initiative’s reach and impact.
